Wizards of Waverly Place Sequel Confirms First Returning Cast Members

Disney Channel’s upcoming Wizards of Waverly Place sequel will feature the return of two more original cast members who will join David Henrie’s Justin Russo and Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo.

Less than a week since it was revealed that Henrie and Gomez are reuniting for Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place sequel, fans have started speculating on which characters from the original sitcom would also be coming back. Shared on Instagram, original cast member David DeLuise seemingly confirmed the return of Alex, Justin and Max’s parents after sharing a photo of him together with Henrie, Gomez and Maria Canals Barrera. The latter played the Russo siblings’ mortal mom, Theresa, while DeLuise portrayed Jerry Russo, a former wizard who gave up his powers to marry Theresa.

Noticeably missing from the Russo family reunion photo is Jake T. Austin, who played Alex and Justin’s youngest sibling Max. The former Disney Channel star has been out of the limelight for quite sometime now. His most recent acting projects were 2017’s Justice League Action series and 2020’s crime thriller film Adverse. It remains to be seen if Austin would also be reprising his fan-favorite role in the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel.

Created by Todd J. Greenwald, the original teen fantasy sitcom aired for four seasons from 2007-2012. Set in New York City, the story centered around the three Russo siblings, who are undergoing magic training for the chance of becoming the family wizard, which will allow them to retain their powers. The series also starred Jennifer Stone as Alex’s best friend Harper, Gregg Sulkin as Alex’s werewolf boyfriend Mason, Bridgit Mendler as Justin’s vampire girlfriend Juliet, Hayley Kiyoko as Stevie, Lucy Hale as Miranda, and more. Throughout the series’ run, it featured lots of guest-stars, including Cindy Crawford, Dwayne Johnson, Octavia Spencer, Shakira, Rachel Dratch, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Wilmer Valderrama, and Austin Butler.

What to Expect in the Wizards of Waverly Place Sequel?

At the moment, Disney has only granted the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel a pilot order. The project revolves around Henrie’s Justin Russo, who, at the end of the series finale, was able to retain his powers after he became the new headmaster for WizTech. However, the upcoming sequel pilot will see adult Justin living a normal human life with his wife and two sons, after he decides to leave the Wizard World. However, he’ll be forced to embrace his past when a powerful young wizard in need of training shows up at his door. As for Gomez’s Alex, she will only appear in a guest-starring capacity, but is also set to serve as an executive producer along with Henrie.

Joining Henrie are new cast members Janice LeAnn Brown as young wizard Billie, Alkaio Thiele as Justin’s oldest son Roman, and Mimi Gianopulos as Justin’s wife Giada. The untitled sequel is being written and executive produced by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas. They previously worked together on Raven’s Home, which is another revival of a classic Disney Channel sitcom That’s So Raven.

All four seasons of Wizards of Waverly Place are available on Disney+.
