Many characters in anime possess powerful innate or magical abilities, from water or wind manipulation to creation magic. One flashy and powerful ability present in many fantasy or shonen anime are explosive powers, and they aren’t just used for mindless destruction. There’s actually a lot of variance in how these powers are portrayed on-screen.
Some explosion-users like KonoSuba’s Megumin, create one large, beautiful blast using traditional magic, while others like Fullmetal Alchemist’s Roy Mustang, can fire off several speedy, smaller blasts at once. Villains like Naruto Shippuden’s Deidara view their explosive powers in a unique and artistic way, helping their character stand out. There are also a few lesser-known explosion users who only appear briefly in their respective series, but whose intellect and powers still deserve a mention.
10 Megumin (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World!)
Megumin from KonoSuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World!’s entire gimmick is explosions. She comes from a family with incredibly powerful magic potential, but chooses to use it on a once-a-day, single-use explosion spell that completely drains Megumin’s energy, effectively leaving her incapacitated.
Other characters in KonoSuba have asked why she doesn’t learn other spells that don’t tax her as much, but Megumin is passionately committed to her daily explosion spell. Megumin doesn’t care if she’s casting her spell on a formidable foe or an inanimate object, either, as long as she uses it every day.
9 Deidara (Naruto)
Deidara is a member of the Akatsuki in Naruto Shippuden. His jutsu centers around art and explosions. Deidara defected from the Explosion Corps and his village, creating sculptures that explode into giant spectacles. For Deidara, the bigger an explosion is and the more destruction it causes, the better.
Deidara believes that art is most beautiful when it’s fleeting, so all of his clay creations are intricate sculptures of various animals that typically end up exploding. This viewpoint causes Deidara to clash with others who view things differently, like Naruto’s Sasori, but Deidara still holds respect for fellow artists.
8 Yoshikage Kira (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable)
Introduced during the Diamond Is Unbreakable arc of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Yoshikage Kira is a methodical killer whose entire combat style revolves around explosions. Instead of being purposefully loud and flashy, Yoshikage prefers to use his stand to set up bombs in ideal locations before luring his victims to their death.
Yoshikage’s stand, Killer Queen, can turn anything into a bomb by touch, allowing Yoshikage to set up his explosions regardless of the location or situation. However, as Yoshikage prefers to avoid actual combat and prefers his stealthy-setup tactics when first introduced, his mastery over his Stand is lacking.
7 Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia)
Katsuki Bakugo’s Quirk in My Hero Academia allows him to secrete nitroglycerin-like sweat from his palms which he uses to create explosions. He’s had his powers from a young age and, up until entering U.A. Academy with other talented young heroes-in-training, Bakugo is praised and heralded as a prodigy.
After being humbled, Bakugo realizes he has a long way to go, and starts getting more creative with his explosive powers. In addition to pure offense, Bakugo also uses his explosions to propel himself through the air, or blind his enemies to gain an advantage in combat. If timed right, Bakugo’s explosions can even shield him from incoming attacks.
Roy Mustang is widely known as the Flame Alchemist in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but he’s capable of much more than simple flame attacks. Mustang often makes use of explosive attacks during combat, and is capable of setting off multiple small blasts in quick succession.
Although outdoor rainstorms neutralize Roy Mustang’s powers, he can use water in other ways to amplify his explosions. Mustang can use his alchemic abilities to ignite the atoms in a closed-off source of water, causing large and powerful explosions, but he also needs an outside ignition source like a lighter.
5 Beerus (Dragon Ball Z)
Dragon Ball Z’s Beerus is a catlike character in both design and personality, who acts according to his own whims. When combined with explosive powers that can pack enough punch to destroy an entire planet, Beerus is unpredictable and highly dangerous.
Beerus views himself and his powers highly, and these views aren’t unfounded. A God of Destruction who’s often seen wiping out planets with his explosions, Beerus is powerful enough to erase entire solar systems off the map. The entire universe could be destroyed by Beerus’ explosive hand if he loses his temper.
4 Gladius (One Piece)
The Devil Fruit that Gladius consumes in One Piece grants him the ability to create localized explosions, either using outside objects or his own body. Gladius doesn’t injure himself using this ability, but anything else he combusts is destroyed. Gladius also can’t use his ability on other living things besides himself.
Short-tempered, Gladius’ powers often come out when angered. He is loyal to Doflamingo, but anyone else is a potential victim of his short-tempered outbursts. Gladius can create large, powerful explosions, and will let his underlings be caught in the blasts without care.
3 Minene Uryuu (Future Diary)
Future Diary’s Minene Uryu’s explosions are more traditional, as hers don’t come from a magical outside source. Instead, Minene’s background as a bomber gives her extensive knowledge on explosives, which is incredibly dangerous when combined with her infiltration skills.
Minene can slip through buildings unnoticed, planting deadly explosives throughout that she can then detonate at will. Trying to render Minene’s bombs ineffective by killing her won’t work, as her bombs are linked to her heartbeat and will explode if her heart stops.
2 Frenda Seivelun (A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Hints about Frenda Seivelun’s powers before her first appearance in A Certain Scientific Railgun contradict how they actually work. Originally classed as a level four Esper, Frenda is another character whose deadly explosive powers come from knowledge and an expansive arsenal, rather than magical abilities.
Typically a user of remote-controlled explosives, Frenda can also create sharp fuses that let her cut through objects. She has a decent knowledge of chemistry as well, which she uses in the creation of her various explosives. Frenda typically has various explosives concealed on her person at all times.
1 Motojiro Kajii (Bungo Stray Dogs)
Bungo Stray Dogs’ Motojiro Kajii is a highly energetic character who single-mindedly pursues his neverending interest in science. His unique ability is called Lemonade, which not only allows him to create lemon-shaped bombs, but also prevents him from taking damage from them.
Motojiro is motivated by science and uses the explosives he creates in his various experiments. He also channels his various negative emotions into his bombs, viewing the lemon bombs he creates as the ultimate destroyer of a world that he finds incredibly tedious.
