Following the premiere of What If…? Season 2, it was revealed that Marvel Studios enlisted a new voice actor for fan-favorite character Groot amid recent controversy surrounding Vin Diesel.
During the first episode of What If…? Season 2, Groot appeared as one of the supporting characters in the Nebula-centered episode, which took place in an alternate timeline where Nebula joined the Nova Corps after Thanos was defeated by Ronan. Per The Direct, the episode’s credits confirmed that long-time Marvel voice actor Fred Tatasciore has replaced Diesel as the voice of Groot in What If…? Season 2, marking the first time that the Fast & Furious star didn’t voice his beloved character. Earlier this year, he was able to reprise Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and in the Disney+ short series I Am Groot Season 2.
The second season of What If…? makes the season bright with one very dark vision for Nebula and a die-hard holiday for Happy Hogan.
At the moment, it remains unclear if Diesel’s exclusion from Marvel Studios’ What If…? Season 2 was due to the most recent legal issues that the actor is currently facing. Last December 21, it was revealed that Diesel has been sued by his former assistant, Asta Jonasson, for alleged sexual battery during the 2010 production of Fast Five. This lawsuit comes after over a year since President Joe Biden signed the Speak Out Act bill into law, which allows victims of sexual assault and harassment to come forward despite previously signing non-disclosure agreements.
The blockbuster actor had just recently shared his response to the lawsuit through his attorney Bryan Freedman, who immediately denied Jonasson’s allegations. “Vin Diesel categorically denies this claim in its entirety,” Freedman said. “This is the first he has ever heard about this more than 13-year-old claim made by a purportedly nine-day employee. There is clear evidence which completely refutes these outlandish allegations.”
Legendary martial arts movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme says Vin Diesel prevented him from joining the Fast and the Furious franchise.
MCU Vets Join What If…? Season 2
Based on Marvel Comics’ comic book anthology series from 1977, What If…? explores alternate timelines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Season 1 stories were inspired by the movies from The Infinity Saga, the next installment will now get to adapt characters and storylines which were first introduced in Marvel Studios’ ongoing The Multiverse Saga. Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright is returning as the voice of The Watcher, who is the extraterrestrial being looking over the events happening within the Marvel multiverse. Season 2 also features the voices of returning MCU vets Haley Atwell, Karen Gillan, Seth Green, Taika Waititi, Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Cate Blanchett, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Kat Dennings, Jeff Goldblum, Sebastian Stan, and more.
In addition, Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs also joined the cast as the voice of Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman who is the first original MCU hero created by Marvel Studios. Before landing Kahhori, Jacob was also cast in the upcoming Echo series. It’s currently unclear if her characters in both MCU shows are related or not. Apart from What If…? Season 2, Marvel Studios is also preparing for the upcoming series debuts of multiple animated shows in 2024, including Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, X-Men ’97 revival, and Eyes of Wakanda.
