Vera Broken Promise Filming Locations: Where Was The British Mystery Crime Series Filmed?

A British mystery crime writer, Ann Cleeves, wrote a series of crime novels, Vera Stanhope, which inspired a British crime drama, Vera Broken Promise. The twelfth series ended on 19 February 2023, and the upcoming will air in 2024.

Vera, a fictional character, works in the Northumberland & City Police as a detective chief inspector and is on the verge of getting retired. She is dedicated to her work but must go through her struggles.

Vera has a calculated mind and empathy for her co-workers. Moreover, she corrects them whenever she finds them going in the wrong direction. Every series has only four episodes (except the eleventh season, which had six).

The series was successful and released in Canada, Finland, Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, Portugal, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, and more.

Vera Broken Promise Filming Locations

The production team chose several locations in Northumberland in North East England and Newcastle, a metropolitan borough on the River Tyne’s northern bank. Thus, Vera Broken Promise Filming Locations include Warkworth, Gateshead, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Amble, Bamburgh, North Shields, Whitley Bay, and Alnmouth.

Exterior Of Vera’s House

A farmhouse is used to portray the exterior of Vera’s house. The farmhouse is on Snook, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, UK, contains salt and dunes marshes, and is a part of the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve.

Till Series 7

For the first few years, the production team filmed in Northumberland. DCI Vera Stanhope (played by Brenda Blethyn) went to Newcastle city center from Northumberland as the series progressed and cases arrived.

Northeast England’s cultural and historical site, Newcastle city center, is full of entertainment, food, and art. Vera also went to Durham, a city south of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Filming occurred on Whitley Bay beach on the north-east coast of London in September 2015 and on The High-Level Bridge, a road and railway bridge connecting the Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne, the following month.

The crew members used a temporary sign for filming at Northumbria University’s quadrangle in 2016, which confused the university students until they saw the filming crew. More filming locations till the seventh series include the Crown Posada bar, Collingwood Street’s Diamond Strip, and Teesside.

Farne Islands

The eighth series began in 2018 with new filming locations. The first episode was filmed on the Farne Islands, where Vera went on a boat. A group of fifteen to twenty islands form the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland, and the number of islands changes according to the level of tide.

Turknaz Restaurant

In the summer of 2018, the crew members filmed some scenes in the Turknaz restaurant, Whitley Bay, where Turkish chefs prepare authentic Turkish cuisine. Further, they moved to the city center and St Nicholas Cathedral.

Low Fell Life Gym

The tenth series was filmed in April 2019. The Low Fell Life Gym in Gateshead was used for filming Vera’s scenes, and the crew members’ vehicles occupied all the parking space. Meanwhile, the actual scene was filmed in a snooker hall above the gym.

Tan Hill Inn, Swaledale

Some scenes from Vera Broken Promise Series 10 Episode 1 were filmed in Tan Hill Inn at Swaledale. It is the highest public house in the United Kingdom, standing 1,732 feet above sea level. Filming also took place at Ridley Park for the same episode, completed by the last week of May 2019.

Port of Tyne

Port of Tyne is in North Shields. Its international passenger terminal was used for filming in 2019 and previously in 2017. Port of Tyne, which comprises commercial docks, is one of Britain’s efficient, innovative, and deep-sea ports. It is located in Tyne and Wear in the Northeast of England.

Eleventh Series

The episodes from the eleventh series were filmed on Ocean Beach (South Shield), Elvaston Park Road (Hexham), villages of Matfen and Stamfordham (Northumberland), Corbridge, Tynemouth Beach, and more.

The Twelfth Series

Filming for the twelfth series began in March 2022. The filming locations include Darlington, Northumberland coastline, Hartlepool, Phil library, Tyneside, Staithes estate in Dunston, Newcastle’s famous Lit, Tyne Valley, and more.
