TV Shows To Watch If You Loved The Star Wars Series

Star Wars has become more prominent than ever after Disney’s acquisition of the intellectual property, and a deluge of movies and television series have followed. There have been mixed results and growing pains over Star Wars’ steadily expanding universe, but there’s been consensus that Ahsoka is an impressive step in the right direction. Ahsoka is written and masterminded by Dave Filoni, who puts his Star Wars: The Clone Wars character in the spotlight as she takes on Grand Admiral Thrawn and other Sith threats.

Ahsoka sticks its landing after eight episodes, but its fans are eager for more stories that explore this galactic hero and Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice. There’s no confirmation that more Ahsoka is on the way or if the character will return to prominence in other Star Wars media. There are, fortunately a number of other science fiction and genre programs that should scratch that Star Wars itch while audiences wait for more Ahsoka Tano adventures.

Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series of the same, sardonically subverts superhero tropes during a time when the genre is at an all-time high and omnipresent in television and film. The Boys has become such a big hit for the streaming service that two spin-offs have already been released, with a third on the way. Audiences were initially weary over The Boys: Gen V, which skews towards a younger audience as it explores college-aged “supes” at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting.

Gen V functions like an ultra-violent version of The X-Men, but it properly justifies itself in The Boys universe instead of just being an extraneous spin-off. Gen V’s subject matter and tone may not seem that similar to Ahsoka’s, but the genre programs overlap when it comes to their themes of conflicted outsiders who want to rage against the system rather than getting co-opted into it. Jaz Sinclair’s Marie Moreau is also a standout female supe who should resonate with Ahsoka Tano fans.

5 Sci-Fi Series Unjustifiably Canceled After 1 Season (& 5 That Went On For Too Long)

Some sci-fi shows are liked by very few people, yet somehow they continue to be renewed season after season, while beloved ones get the ax.

Joss Whedon’s canceled FOX sci-fi space-western, Firefly, is still hard for many fans to accept, despite the slight closure that’s been provided courtesy of a follow-up feature film, Serenity, and many canonical comic books. Firefly is set in the 2500s and follows a rag-tag crew of renegades who travel the galaxy with modest attempts to pull in bounties and avoid apprehension from the federal government Alliance.

Ahsoka’s allies in the Star Wars series are reminiscent of Serenity’s crew, and their innovative approaches to a version of outer space that feel both futuristic and in the past share a lot in common. Firefly’s female characters, Zoe, Inara, River, and Kaylee almost feel like distillations of Ahsoka Tano’s diverse character traits. Anyone who’s invested in Ahsoka’s exploits will find something to appreciate in Firefly’s strong female characters.

Star Trek and Star Wars have frequently been treated like complementary science fiction franchises, both of which are in the middle of a resurgence with many new television series that expand their universes. Star Trek: Picard brings back Patrick Stewart in his iconic role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as many familiar faces from the USS Enterprise. Picard begins with the captain’s retirement, but it’s not long until he’s pulled back into extreme space adventures that involve synthetic beings’ rights, alternate realities and time travel, and one last Borg invasion.

Picard has a mixed reception, and there are certainly changes between the titular character’s depiction in The Next Generation and Picard. However, it’s still a substantial return to a beloved universe that’s not unlike Ahsoka’s return to Anakin Skywalker and other revered Star Wars relics. Picard reckons with his past as it informs his future, and there are clear parallels between his journey and that of Ahsoka Tano.

Dave Filoni has become Star Wars’ saving grace in the Disney+ era, and his passion for George Lucas’ universe and characters is one of the primary reasons that Ahsoka turned out to be such a success. However, Filoni’s work on Ahsoka wouldn’t be possible without the years that he put in on Avatar: The Last Airbender before his transition over to Star Wars content.

Filoni’s distinct character development, serialized storytelling, and delicate world-building are evident all the way back in Avatar, even if the series doesn’t tap into the same science fiction heights of The Clone Wars or Ahsoka. However, the concept of surviving Avatars who are the last of their kind, bears a lot in common with Star Wars’ Jedi. The greater power that they tap into also feels reminiscent of The Force. Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as its female-led successor, The Legend of Korra, are a satisfying look into Filoni’s early days as a storyteller.

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen graphic novel series is seen as the Holy Grail of superhero comics, so audiences were understandably skeptical when a TV series based on the property was announced. Damon Lindelof, coming off the high of The Leftovers, subverted and surpassed expectations by telling an original story that’s set more than three decades after the events of the comics, but still set within the same world. The result is a stunning deconstruction of identity, race, vigilantism, and power that effectively expands upon its source material’s ideas and themes, yet through an original lens.

Watchmen is deeply thought-provoking and prides itself in its ability to revolutionize the genre rather than further indulge in franchise fatigue. Watchmen and Ahsoka are both heightened genre stories that are worried about humanity’s survival, but Watchmen remains terrestrial in its narrative. Additionally, Watchmen’s Angela “Sister Night” Abar is cut from the same cloth as Ahsoka’s tortured protagonist.

10 TV Shows To Watch If You Like The Legend Of Vox Machina

Fans of The Legend of Vox Machina have plenty of other shows in the same wheelhouse, from Stranger Things to House of the Dragon.

The “video game curse” stigma has been properly put to rest thanks to productions like The Last of Us, Castlevania, the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, and Netflix’s animated hit, Arcane. Arcane is set within Riot Games’ League of Legends universe, but it opts to use the game’s framework as environmental world-building rather than a direct one-to-one adaptation. The result is an incredible tale of dystopian steampunk fantasy that pits two sisters, Vi and Jinx, against each other as tensions mount in this chaotic world. Arcane resonates with League of Legends fans, but the series doesn’t require any pre-existing knowledge of the gaming franchise in order to be enjoyed.

Arcane banks on gorgeous visuals, intense character development, and complex action and fight sequences. The animated series’ world-building brings Ahsoka’s varied universe to mind, but it’s the ebb and flow of Vi and Jinx’s frayed relationship that’s most akin to Ahsoka’s storytelling. The decaying relationship between these two sisters is quite similar to Ahsoka Tano’s own frayed relationship with Anakin Skywalker. Personal convictions and corruption are essential in both of these sci-fi series.

Krypton Tells a Shakespearean Tragedy With Superheroes in Space

2 Seasons, 20 Episodes

David S. Goyer’s Krypton only lasted for two seasons, but it came around during a time when connected universes and superhero world-building were the new normal. Superman’s history has been explored through multiple TV shows and movies, but Krypton shifts the focus to two centuries before Kal-El’s birth, where Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El, is the protagonist.

Krypton gets a lot of mileage out of its deconstruction of the House of El’s Kryptonian shame and Seg-El’s efforts to rehabilitate his family’s name, yet it’s also rich in familiar Superman rogues like Brainiac Lobo and Doomsday. Krypton and Ahsoka both provide formative backstories for their larger universes that explore societal and political uprising against exaggerated versions of outer space and alien species. Both series also tease doomed characters who can’t avoid their cursed fates, whether it’s Krypton’s eventual demise or Anakin Skywalker’s corruption into Darth Vader.

10 Arrowverse Projects That Could Inspire The DCU

The Arrowverse has come to its climatic conclusion, but its influence can be felt across DC. The DCU can learn a lot from the TV Multiverse.

The CW’s Arrowverse is far from perfect, but it deserves accolades for over a decade of satisfying, serialized superhero storytelling. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is a curious creation that took advantage of the many entertaining supporting players on Arrow and The Flash. Legends of Tomorrow is made up of a grab bag of heroes and villains who were introduced in previous series that’s not dissimilar to how Ahsoka builds upon plot threads and characters who were introduced in The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian.

Legends of Tomorrow is a rare instance of a show that gets better, weirder, and more confident as it goes on as it eschews comic book archetypes with an emphasis on time travel mayhem. Legends of Tomorrow, like Ahsoka, is a piece of a bigger whole that’s best appreciated if the audience has a complete understanding of the Arrowverse. Legends of Tomorrow has a huge, revolving cast of eclectic characters, many of whom are courageous women like Sara Lance, Vixen, and Nora Darhk, all of whom could hold their own against Ahsoka Tano.

The Expanse, based on James S. A. Corey’s prolific science fiction novel series, is one of the most exciting hard sci-fi shows to come out in the past decade. The Expanse is set in the future, where much of outer space has been colonized, which brings Ahsoka’s layered worlds to mind. A determined team of professionals gets caught up in a dangerous conspiracy that puts them in contact with alien technology and destructive implications for humanity’s survival.

There’s some debate that the show’s three final seasons after it transitions from SyFy to Amazon Prime Video aren’t as strong as their predecessors, but they remain true to the grander narrative and engage in suspenseful world-building. The thread that The Expanse’s characters pull at and the universal consequences that come forward as a result also bring Ahsoka Tano’s crusade to mind as she attempts to find balance between the galaxy’s extreme forces.

SyFy’s Battlestar Galactica remake improves upon its 1978 predecessor, and it helped put the cable network on the map with its prestige programming that was both critically and commercially successful, not unlike Ahsoka on Disney+. Battlestar Galactica focuses on humanity’s grueling war against Cylons, an advanced cybernetic race who are hellbent on humanity’s extinction. Battlestar Galactica embraces space opera melodrama, political intrigue, and the blurred lines between heroes and villains, all of which are under examination in Ahsoka.

Battlestar Galactica is also no stranger to shifting alliances and internal struggles as its heroes question their cause and feel increasingly in jeopardy. Ahsoka features brave, inspirational, and conflicted heroines, which are also present in Battlestar Galactica through characters like Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. It’s sophisticated sci-fi storytelling at its finest.
