TV Couples Who Follow The Enemies To Lovers And Opposites Attract Trope

Relationships have their highs and lows, and TV couples aren’t exempt from the norm. Television couples bicker for various reasons, whether they’re in a healthy relationship or a toxic one. Some couples squabble over small matters because they have vastly different personalities and ways of thinking. Other couples fight endlessly back and forth because they begin as enemies but eventually turn to lovers because they cannot deny their chemistry.

Even couples who are happily married for many years — or centuries, if they’re vampires — still find things to argue over. The best couples find common ground with each other and respect the differences between them. After they fight, they find ways to support one another and gain a greater understanding of each other.

Chuck and Blair are an infamous TV drama pairing: their love story surprises the whole cast of characters in Gossip Girl. Blair Waldorf is notoriously uptight, while Chuck Bass is known for being a bad boy layabout. The characters change over time, though, developing into more nuanced people. Chuck and Blair have one of the longest-running slow-burn romance arcs in the entire series.

Chuck’s selfless, helpful side comes out when Blair is in trouble, and Chuck is one of the few people Blair will reach out to for help. Chuck can tell that Blair has a thing for him, and he teases her mercilessly about it, while Blair insists that he’s beneath her. The two both fear vulnerability and make each other jealous with other love interests, all while they yearn for each other secretly.

Each Bridgerton season follows a different Bridgerton sibling and their love story, and Kate and Anthony of Season 2 are the most cantankerous couple yet. As is often the case with couples who can’t stop fighting in romance, Kate and Anthony get into petty squabbles so much because they can’t decide whether what they feel is love or hate. Eventually, they cannot deny the chemistry building between them.

Kate has a genuinely good reason for being annoyed with Anthony. When she first came across him, she overheard him talking about courting and women in a callous manner. Her ill feelings compound when Anthony courts her sister. Anthony finds Kate meddlesome, and though Kate is indeed meddlesome, she’s also a wonderful sister, and the perfect wife for him.

10 Best Nick Miller Quotes in New Girl

One of the most beloved and funniest sitcom characters, Nick is known for his clever, absurd, and hilarious quotes in New Girl.

Nick and Jessica are both as goofy as they come in New Girl but in totally different ways. Nick is a socially awkward and introverted pessimist, whereas Jess thrives off of optimism, extreme whimsy, and being surrounded by friends. Even though they are completely different, they both grow closer to each other.

Jess is feistier with Nick than he is with her. Nick tends to just get confused and flounder, and it seems as though Jess gets argumentative because she’s frustrated both that she likes him, and because he tends to misunderstand every situation. Fortunately, no matter how hard Nick and Jess fight their feelings, they can’t seem to resist flirting with each other.

Maxwell Sheffield is eternally charmed by Fran Fine in The Nanny, but that doesn’t stop him from pushing back on her more eccentric ideas. This fashionable ’90s sitcom couple exemplifies the flirting-through-fighting dynamic. Fran teases Maxwell, encouraging him to lighten up.

Fran may throw Maxwell for a loop more often than not, but she’s the kind of counterbalance the buttoned-up businessman needs. Fran is also wonderful about keeping things light, even when she disagrees with Maxwell on what’s best for the children. At the end of the day, the two of them have the same kinds of values, even if their upbringing and worldviews are completely divergent.

10 Perks of Rewatching Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls is an iconic feminist dramedy from the 2000s. These are some of the best reasons to give the show a rewatch.

Fans and critics alike praise Luke and Lorelai as the best and most complete romance arc in Gilmore Girls. Luke is the total opposite of Lorelai, but he’s everything that she needs in a partner. On average, Lorelai is a responsible person, but she benefits from a partner who can give her space, adore her, and tell her when she’s in the wrong or needs to slow down.

Lorelai loves tweaking Luke’s nose — and it’s notoriously easy to tweak. Luke gets annoyed with nearly everyone in town, especially Jess, Taylor, TJ, and Kirk. When it comes to Lorelai, he takes her pestering in stride, and often turns it into flirting. He may be a total grump, but he’ll always be at Lorelai’s beck and call.

4 Thornton & Margaret Had an Unfortunate First Meeting in North & South

Margaret Hale judges Mr. Thornton when she first meets him in North and South, based on the historical romance novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, because she’s shocked to see him shout at a child. She immediately decides that he’s just another heartless, cold merchant who cares nothing for his workers, and hates the emerging workers’ union as much as the other mill owners. While Thornton is willing to admit that Margaret can be naive, he admires her intelligence, compassion, and strength of character.

When Thornton proposes for the first time to Margaret, they immediately devolve into a fight that goes well beyond their usual politely-veiled bickering. They use anger to hide their hurt feelings. Margaret is completely scared off by the strength of Thornton’s feelings for her, and isn’t sure whether his proposal comes from a place of sincerity. Thornton fires back that it’s obvious that she’s classist toward him, and he shows her that he does indeed care for his workers, and is willing to work with the union.

10 Most Likable Characters In Shameless

Showtime’s Shameless ran for 11 seasons. Having grown up and developed, plenty of the characters were still likable by the end.

Kevin and Veronica work hard, fight hard, and play hard in Shameless. Kevin often whines that V shares all their secrets with the Gallaghers, as if they’re practically raising them. Likewise, V knows that Kev is all bark and no bite, and happily dismisses him.

Kevin often remarks that Veronica leads him by the teeth, but ultimately, he’s a himbo who is immensely attracted to V’s leadership qualities. He’s the brawn and Veronica is the brains, which means that sometimes it takes a while for Kev to catch up to some of V’s thoughts. Though the couple fights about things big and small (they do have rather stressful lives), they don’t let that eclipse how much they love and admire each other.

2 Darcy Judges Amanda in Lost in Austen

Amanda and Mr. Darcy clash all the time in the mini-series Lost in Austen. It’s expected as Mr. Darcy is a well-to-do, privileged gentleman, and Amanda is a scrappy modern girl who accidentally time travels to Regency Era England. Lost in Austen takes the bickering between Elizabeth and Darcy, the first enemies-to-lovers couple, in the original Pride and Prejudice, and intensifies it with a modern protagonist.

The question is the same for this couple as with the original Pride and Prejudice romance arc: if Mr. Darcy can overcome his pride and admit he loves a girl he never expected to like or respect. Mr. Darcy needs to work through a lot of pride and prejudice for Amanda’s sake. Amanda finds that Mr. Darcy is just as snarky in real life as he is in her book, and she doesn’t have the circumspect grace of a Regency Era lady.

Bob and Linda are two sitcom cartoon parents littered with delightful foibles in Bob’s Burgers. Linda prefers to romanticize her life to the point of hilarity, though she knows how to take matters seriously when it comes to her kids. Bob has more of a nervous nature, and he takes things very seriously.

Often, Linda prances around the restaurant and the house, entertaining herself by putting on a one-woman show. Bob tends to try to reel her in with a monotonous “Linda…” but he’s rarely successful. Although he’s more down to earth than his wife is on average, Bob ultimately wouldn’t change Linda and the energy she brings to the family.
