Like their canon counterparts, several female Jedi from Star Wars Legends such as Mara Jade and Nomi Sunrider accomplished a great deal in their respective eras. Some saved the Jedi Order from collapsing while others led the Order against Sith empires. Their deeds resulted in future Jedi revering them and instructing their students to imitate their influential predecessors.
Measuring an individual’s importance requires an examination of many factors. The strength of the Jedi and the Sith at the time, who they affected, how the galaxy changed because of them, and many more elements are worthy of consideration. Ultimately, the Jedi and the galaxy would have succumbed to the Sith many times over if these female Jedi were not around to oppose them in their own ways.
10 Tionne Solusar Almost Single-Handedly Restored the Jedi Archives
While there are peaceful planets in the Star Wars franchise, Legends fans have seen several dark worlds that are forever tied to the Sith’s legacy.
- She prevented the history of the Jedi from being forgotten.
Luke Skywalker deserves much praise for rebuilding the Jedi Order after Darth Sidious nearly exterminated them, but Tionne Solusar recovered and preserved thousands of years of Jedi history. The Emperor attempted to remove the good deeds of the Jedi from memory, but Tionne’s efforts kept the Jedi’s reputation intact. She traveled the galaxy to research and recover what had been lost.
Tionne’s decision to regather information about the Jedi was vital for training the New Jedi Order. While Luke was a great teacher to her and the other students, Obi-Wan and Yoda did not instruct him about the past generations of the Jedi Order. Tionne accommodated this weak link as she brought context to Luke’s lessons and ensured the continued knowledge of the Jedi Order and what it accomplished.
9 Tahiri Veila Emerged Stronger After Many Internal Trials
- She returned to the Jedi despite experiencing great suffering and manipulation.
A major player in the conflicts following the Galactic Civil War was Tahiri Veila. Beginning as a student of Luke Skywalker in the New Jedi Order, she became close with his nephew, Anakin Solo. Tahiri experienced many hardships as a Jedi including Anakin’s sacrifice, the Yuuzhan Vong implanting a second personality within her, and Darth Caedus manipulating her into becoming his apprentice.
How Tahiri handled these issues highlights her effect on the galaxy. For example, she was instrumental in defeating the Yuuzhan Vong due to her use of her condition, but she brought chaos to the galaxy while serving Darth Caedus. Tahiri’s willpower is fully recognized when she returns to the Jedi Order despite her crimes, later public trials, and internal struggles.
8 Tenel Ka Djo Found a Balance Between Being a Jedi and a Queen
- She handled conflicts between Force-users as well as political schemes on a galactic level.
The life of a Jedi is known to be difficult, yet Tenel Ka Djo had to deal with its difficulties along with her royal family duties. As the daughter of a Dathomiri witch and the prince of the Hapes Consortium, which contains over a hundred star systems, much was expected of her before she joined the Jedi. When Tenel did join Luke’s New Jedi Order, a relationship between her and Luke’s nephew, Jacen Solo, bloomed.
Despite always having a place with the Jedi, Tenel prioritized her family duties as the queen. In the conflicts following the war against the Yuuzhan Vong, she was a major political figure whose decisions affected the whole galaxy. Additionally, her relationship with Darth Caedus was important because of Jacen’s extraordinarily influential presence in the galaxy and the Legends continuity overall.
7 Nomi Sunrider Mastered Several of the Most Powerful Light Side Abilities
Before the animated Star Wars series came along, Tales of the Jedi was a comic series set in the Old Republic. How do the two iterations compare?
- Her unique understanding of the Force helped end the Great Sith War.
One of the first female Jedi to become a revered member of the Order was Nomi Sunrider. Her partnership with Ulic Qel-Droma illustrates her importance in several ancient Jedi conflicts. Nomi participated in the Freedon Nadd Uprising, the Krath Holy Crusade, the Great Sith War, and the Mandalorian Wars, making her one of the most experienced Jedi in history.
Vital to her success was her mastery of unique yet powerful Force abilities. Nomi used Battle Meditation against the Naddists, cut Ulic off from the Force entirely, and led the Jedi army in trapping Exar Kun’s spirit in a wall of light. Her efforts paid off as she eventually became the Grand Master of the Jedi Order and was praised thousands of years later by students of Luke Skywalker.
6 Satele Shan Led the Jedi Against the Renewed Sith Empire
- She possessed the skill to fight Sith Lords but also the wisdom to work with them.
Few Jedi have surpassed Satele Shan in raw talent. As the descendant of two of the most powerful Force users of the Old Republic era — Darth Revan and Bastila Shan — Satele was gifted with inherent skill, charisma, and understanding. She put all of these traits to use against the Sith Empire during the Great Galactic War, the subsequent Cold War, and the Second Great Galactic War.
Satele is an exceptional fighter, as seen by her ability to hold off Darth Malgus well before she became Grand Master of the Jedi Order. The choice to make her Grand Master proved to be a good one thanks to her ability to inspire and guide during an epoch of war. Additionally, Satele was unique in that she was willing to make peace with Darth Marr, the leader of the Sith for a time, to fight a common enemy and advance their understanding of the Force.
5 Bastila Shan Redeemed the Most Powerful Force User of Her Time
Knights of the Old Republic’s Bastila Shan is one of Star Wars’ most underrated heroes and a powerful Jedi who changed the trajectory of the Order.
- Darth Revan and Darth Malak would have destroyed the Jedi if not for her.
Not many Jedi can be considered invaluable to the continued existence of the Order, but Bastila Shan easily fits the bill. During the Jedi Civil War, her Battle Meditation was the only thing preventing Darth Revan from effortlessly destroying the Jedi and taking control of the galaxy. Bastila’s largest contribution was her successful capture of Darth Revan when he was betrayed by his apprentice Darth Malak.
After Revan’s mind was wiped, Bastila joined him in saving the galaxy by destroying the Star Forge and defeating Darth Malak. A major factor in their success was the Force Bond established between them during their first encounter. Using this bond, Bastila was able to teach Revan to once again follow the Light Side, which resulted in Revan gaining far more power and culminated in their marriage.
4 Kreia Taught Several Important Figures of the Old Republic Era
- Her elevated understanding of the Force guided Jedi and Sith.
Despite being recognized primarily as a Sith Lord, Kreia was vital in saving the galaxy several times over. From her inception to her death, Kreia aided Jedi and Sith as a teacher. Her Sith students were Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion, but she also frequently instructed and advised the two most important Jedi from the Old Republic era: Revan and Meetra Surik, the Jedi Exile.
Kreia was able to teach these vastly different yet equally powerful Force users due to her unique perspective on the Force. The Revanchists who joined Darth Revan as Dark Jedi all learned from her, but identifying Kreia as an evil Sith does a disservice to her complexity. Regardless of her actions as Darth Traya, she saved the galaxy multiple times through Revan and the Exile.
3 Mara Jade Skywalker Helped Shape the Galaxy After the Empire’s Fall
Mara Jade is still one of the best characters in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. It’s a shame she no longer exists.
- She began as the Emperor’s servant but joined Luke in rebuilding the Jedi.
A female Jedi whose importance in the New Republic era is surpassed only by her popularity as a character is Mara Jade Skywalker. Introduced as a Hand of the Emperor, Mara Jade’s journey took her to many worlds and many occupations, but she ultimately found herself marrying Luke Skywalker and becoming a Jedi Master. Few characters received as much development as her in the Expanded Universe.
As a Jedi, Mara Jade assisted Luke in guiding the younger generation. For example, she took Jaina Solo as an apprentice who would go on to become the paragon of the New Jedi Order. Luke Skywalker himself — the man who saved the galaxy and rebuilt the Jedi Order from scratch — would improve in many ways thanks to the presence, guidance, and support of Mara Jade.
2 Jaina Solo Personified the Success of the New Jedi Order
It may not be the main Star Wars continuity, but fans of the Legends canon know who the best heroes are in a galaxy far, far away.
- She fought in many conflicts from a young age to keep the galaxy safe.
Luke Skywalker could rest easy after his hard work rebuilding the Jedi Order thanks to his niece, Jaina Solo. After she trained with her brothers Jacen and Anakin, the Solo children became the vanguard of the New Jedi Order in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong, a conflict on an unprecedented scale. Anakin would later sacrifice himself and Jacen would turn to the Dark Side and become Darth Caedus.
Despite feeling the pull of the Dark Side, Jaina was steadfast in leading the Jedi and would eventually defeat her brother in single combat as well as help Luke defeat the godlike entity Abeloth. Her relationship with and subsequent marriage to Jagged Fel would also heavily affect the galaxy as her descendants would become the emperors and empresses of the galaxy in the Legacy era. Simply put, her importance is colossal.
1 Meetra Surik Saved the Jedi From Being Purged Altogether
- She defeated all three Sith Lords of the Dark Wars and rebuilt the Jedi Order.
Mirroring Luke Skywalker’s role in defeating the Sith and renewing the Jedi Order from nothing is Meetra Surik. She joined Revan and Malak in the Mandalorian Wars but was deeply affected by the Mass Shadow Generator, prompting her to return to the Jedi Council and accept exile. Her status as a Force Wound began with the superweapon, but this condition would save the galaxy.
Using her unique state as a Wound in the Force, Meetra defeated the three Sith Lords responsible for the First Jedi Purge: the life-consuming Darth Nihilus, the immortal Darth Sion, and finally her mentor Darth Traya. Afterward, she trained her friends and companions to become Jedi. Despite several consecutive wars in the Old Republic era, Meetra personally saved and restored the Jedi when nearly all of them were gone.
Created by George Lucas, Star Wars began in 1977 with the then-eponymous film that would later be retitled Episode IV: A New Hope. The original Star Wars trilogy centered on Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, who helped lead the Rebel Alliance to victory over the tyrannous Galactic Empire. This Empire was overseen by Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine, who was aided by the cybernetic menace known as Darth Vader. In 1999, Lucas returned to Star Wars with a prequel trilogy that explored how Luke’s father Anakin Skywalker became a Jedi and eventually succumbed to the dark side of the Force.
