10 Best Anime Getting New Seasons In 2024

2024 has some great anime slated for release, including classics like Kimi ni Todoke and long-awaited continuations of Black Butler and Konosuba.

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! is a romantic comedy by Kai Ikada. Tsubasa Shiki, a high school student, moves from Tokyo to Kitami, a prefecture in Hokkaido. He befriends a native girl named Minami Fuyuki, who goes on to teach him the ways of Hokkaido’s unique lifestyle. There has been a recent resurgence of anime’s gyaru character trope. Gyaru is a Japanese fashion subculture where individuals dress in a more Westernized fashion style with bleach-blonde hair and acrylic nails. Gyarus are rebels against traditional Japanese beauty standards and social norms. However, they are often seen as flirtatious and ditzy. They frequently present themselves as an analogue to America’s “dumb blonde” stereotype. Fortunately, anime allows gyaru characters to break the typical stereotypes that are associated with them. Gyaru girls have optimistic and energetic personalities, plus they care deeply for their friends.

Many of these gyaru characters become fan-favorites, such as Marin Kitagawa from My Dress-Up Darling and Akari Watanabe from More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!‘s main female character, Minami Fuyuki, is another gyaru character to obsess over. Minami showcases a bubbly and playful personality. Additionally, there aren’t many anime series set in Hokkaido, which means that this new series gives fans an appreciated glimpse into Hokkaido culture. Many romantic comedies are set in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka, but a series that’s set in Hokkaido provides a new perspective on Japanese lifestyle that’s rarely seen in anime. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! premieres on Crunchyroll on January 9th.

4 A Sign Of Affection Tells A Modern Love Story For The Ages (January 6)

The two have a chance encounter when Yuki experiences trouble communicating directions to a foreign traveler. Itsuomi comes to her rescue. Yuki and Itsuomi go on a date, which potentially leads to something more.

Romance anime have come a long way when it comes to the diversity of relationships that are now on display. This includes LGTBQIA+ relationships and romances that involve impaired individuals. These series cater to a wide audience, especially those who also struggle with hearing and communication loss. Yuki is an inspirational protagonist who represents that love is possible for everyone if they just allow themselves to get to know others and open up. Fans of A Silent Voice and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish should check out A Sign of Affection, which premieres on Crunchyroll on January 6th.

Metallic Rouge is an original anime series by Studio Bones that’s in celebration of their 25th anniversary. In Metallic Rouge, humans live alongside androids known as Neans. The story focuses on a friendship between an android girl named Rouge Redstar and her friend, Naomi Orthmann. The two plan a mission to Mars to eradicate the Immortal Nine, a group of rebellious androids who threaten the government.

Metallic Rouge is a must-watch for mecha fans, such as 86: Eighty-Six and Sakugun. Metallic Rouge also stars two independent female characters. Rouge and Naomi will hopefully be seen as modern role models for young female anime fans. The duo is intelligent, strong, and free-thinking. Metallic Rouge will resonate with mecha fans, but it also brings in audiences who enjoy broader science fiction and dystopian genre storytelling. The series brings forth some thoughtful questions about humanity and whether humans can coexist with artificial intelligence. Metallic Rouge debuts on Crunchyroll on January 11th.

2 Delicious In Dungeon Mixes Fantasy Hijinks With Hungry Appetites (January 4)

Delicious in Dungeon is a fantasy comedy manga series created by Ryoko Kui. Adventurers explore and raid dungeons with hopes of getting rich or discovering the Golden Kingdom, a mysterious island dungeon that contains unimaginable treasure. One day, a group of adventurers set out to slay a dragon. Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan. The guild leader’s sister, Falin, gets swallowed by the dragon, but not before she teleports the rest of her guild members to safety. The guild leader, Laois, along with two other party members, return to the dungeon to save Falin before she’s digested.

However, the party faces financial difficulties when it comes to funding this mission, particularly with gathering food, supplies, and recruitment. The group decides to resolve their issues by turning the dungeon’s many monsters into their meals. The team befriends a dwarf named Senshi who is well-versed in the dungeon’s local monster cuisine. The party enters the dungeon with newfound confidence to save Falin, all while they cook delicious monster meals along the way.

Delicious in Dungeon combines Dungeons & Dragons-style world-building with gourmet cooking. The anime provides a sense of adventure and comedy, like Log Horizon and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Yet, Delicious in Dungeon also provides a wholesome storyline about family and the lengths that one goes to save sibling, like in Demon Slayer. Furthermore, the anime provides a unique perspective on the use of monster meat as the main ingredient for its food. It’s not unlike the general premise in Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill, where the main character uses monster meat to recreate Japanese-style food. Delicious in Dungeon airs on Netflix on January 4th.
