- The surprise reboot of The Toxic Avenger has received glowing reviews and a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Critics praise the movie’s wild and rowdy nature, applauding the filmmaker’s use of practical effects and passion for the genre.
- While the film may not be for everyone, it is hailed as a celebration of movie magic and a good choice for fans of the franchise.
The surprise reboot of superhero comedy horror movie The Toxic Avenger could result in one of the most entertaining cinematic experiences of the year, as the movie debuts with a near-perfect score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, aka The Toxic Avenger, the reboot now sits at a hugely promising 95% on the Tomatometer, with reviews praising this wild tale of a monster who sets out to do good.
We begin with Perri Nemiroff of Collider, who awards The Toxic Avenger an impressive 8/10, and calls the movie a “bonkers & bloody delight.”
“A bonkers & bloody delight. Macon Blair’s Toxic Avenger is a hugely enjoyable & rowdy escape that also feels like a celebration of movie magic, especially the wild things one can create with ingenuity, practical effects & a lot of passion for the genre.”
Mashable’s Belen Edwards meanwhile applauds the scenery-chewing of Kevin Bacon and concludes that The Toxic Avenger is at its best when going bigger.
“Like Bacon, The Toxic Avenger gets better the bigger it goes, especially since “going bigger” means further distancing itself from the casings of standard superhero flicks.”
Some critics reveal that The Toxic Avenger is likely to appeal to those familiar with the franchise, which began back in 1984. As Variety’s Michael Nordine puts it…
“This is largely a fans-only proposition, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”
Katie Rife of indieWire adds that “agreeably stupid” is the necessary state.
“Here, “agreeably stupid” is the order of the day… It’s a deliberate choice on the filmmaker’s part — one that will alienate much of the film’s potential audience, but will appeal to those already primed to snicker their way through it.”
The Toxic Avenger Is Brimming With Blood-Drenched Chaos and Self-Aware Humor
The only ‘rotten’ review comes courtesy of Neal Pollack of Book & Film Globe, but even he found something to enjoy in The Toxic Avenger’s unique approach.
“The Toxic Avenger isn’t for everyone, or even for anyone. It’s not great. It isn’t even really very good. But it’s definitely something else.”
Finally, Jacob Hall of Slashfilm felt that The Toxic Avenger will put off some moviegoers, but director Macon Blair knows exactly who he’s appealing to.
“Will most people appreciate that wry sensibility? I’m not sure. Blair made a movie that feels built to amuse himself. And I’m glad it exists. It feels like he got away with … something. Lots of people are going to hate “The Toxic Avenger” and its avalanche of blood-drenched chaos and self-aware, silly asides. But for the dozen or so people on Blair’s wavelength … I guess I’m one of them.”
The Toxic Avenger is set in a fantasy world and follows Winston, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-X health club. After being diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power-hungry employer refuses to pay for, Winston decides to take matters into his own hands and rob his company.
But, after Winston falls into a pit of toxic waste and is transformed into a deformed monster, he sets out to do good and get back at all the people who have wronged him.
Written and directed by Macon Blair, The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Sarah Niles, Julia Davis, Julian Kostov, and Elijah Wood.
