The Strongest Star Wars Characters, Ranked

Even after dominating popular culture for more than four decades, Star Wars has proven to be just as relevant today as it was in the past. The epic space opera has become so expansive and vast it now resorts to telling the origin stories of its original beloved cast. The standard Jedi or Sith is already so much more powerful than the average human or alien, making it difficult to grade who among them is stronger than the rest.

The fact that the Force has always been a nebulous concept, largely by design, doesn’t help narrow down the field. However, the Force isn’t the only factor to one’s strength. As many of Star Wars’ most powerful champions have proven time and time again, a character’s strengths can come from many sources in a galaxy far, far away.

Updated on December 4, 2023 by Jennifer Roy: As the Star Wars universe continues to expand, new heroes and villains continue to join the ranks of powerful characters. We’ve updated this list to include some of these characters and to expand upon many characters’ new achievements in more recent works.

Star Wars’ 18 Worst Jedi, Ranked

As a constant fixture of the Star Wars universe, most Jedi are heroic, wise warriors. However, the worst Jedi are incompetent or immoral.

30 General Grievous

First Appearance: Star Wars: Clone Wars (2004)

Major Feats & Abilities

Highly skilled lightsaber combatant

Experienced military strategist and warlord

Cybernetic body allowed a wide variety of unexpected combat tactics

One of the more underrepresented villains in the Star Wars canon, General Grievous has a claim to being one of the deadliest combatants in the galaxy. Appearing as a Separatist general mid-way through the Clone Wars, Grievous was obsessed with war and combat. His cybernetically-enhanced body allowed him to wield four lightsabers at once, each one stolen from a Jedi he killed.

Apart from the physical power he wielded, Grievous also commanded the Separatist droid army and had several tens of millions of robotic soldiers at his beck and call at all times. Even if Grievous was unarmed, he had a legion of deadly machines at his back. Grievous was a formidable fighter, having been taught the art of lightsaber combat by Count Dooku himself. Though his legacy did not last, Grievous still deserves respect as one of the most prolific Jedi-killers of all time.

29 N’Kata Del Gormo

First Appearance: “Design An Alien” contest entry in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine by Chuck Hamilton (1996)

Gormo in Star Wars, a four-limbed alien

Major Feats & Abilities

Trained Jedi Grand Master Yoda

N’Kata Del Gormo is a Hysalrian — a snake-like species with four human arms whose habitat is mostly restricted to their swampy home planet. Other than Del Gormo’s claim to fame — instructing Yoda in the Jedi Force arts — the Hysalrian are basically forgettable.

However, anyone who can claim to teach Yoda, the Grand Master of the Jedi and a galactically renowned leader, is certain to be overwhelmingly powerful when it comes to martial skills. According to Star Wars Legends, N’Kata Del Gormo’s nonviolent attitude rubbed off on Yoda, further shaping the arc of his student’s future.

28 A’Sharad Hett/Darth Krayt

First Appearance: Star Wars: Republic: Outlander #10 by writer Timothy Truma, penciler Rick Leonardi, inker Mark Lipka, and letterer Dave McCaig (1999)

Darth Krayt wielding two lightsabers in a Star Wars comic

Major Feats & Abilities

Combined Tusken Raider martial arts with lightsaber combat

Suppressed Jedi precognitive abilities using the dark side

Maintained his abilities even in the face of Force-suppressing Yuuzhan Vong parasites

15 Star Wars Legends Villains Who Need To Be Brought Into Canon

Star Wars Legends features many notable villains who deserve a place in the official canon alongside Darth Vader and others.

A’Sharad Hett was a Tusken Raider and Jedi. His father, Sharad Hett, was also a Jedi, but he was assassinated by the former Jedi and bounty hunter Aurra Sing. A’Sharad Hett received teaching from Jedi Masters Ki-Adi-Mundi and An’ya Kuro, aka the Dark Woman. Hett survived Order 66 and the Galactic Civil War by escaping back to Tatooine and living as a Tusken Raider once again.

Around this time, Hett made contact with the spirit of XoXaan, one of the first Sith Lords. Hett was corrupted by the Dark Side and captured by the invading Yuuzhan Vong soon after. Hett was grafted to a living Yuuzhan Vong suit of armor and Darth Krayt was officially born, with an entire army of Sith at his disposal. In the end, Darth Krayt was slain by Cade Skywalker, Luke Skywalker’s grandson. Krayt is confined to Legends now, and his close ties to the Yuuzhan Vong mean he’ll probably stay there.

27 The Grand Inquisitor

First Appearance: Star Wars Rebels (2014)

Dave Filoni

Major Feats & Abilities

Superior force and lightsaber combat abilities suited to hunting down surviving Jedi

Reported directly to Darth Vader and commanded an elite force of other Inquisitors

Originally a humble guard at the Jedi Temple, the Grand Inquisitor was secretly a Sith agent on a deep cover assignment within the Jedi Order. He was so good at masking his dark aura that not even a citadel of the most powerful Jedi alive could tell he’d been turned. After the rise of the Empire, he revealed himself as a Sith agent and was made Grand Inquisitor. In this role, he was tasked with hunting down the remainder of the Jedi Order following Order 66.

Armed with a squadron of Inquisitors and their signature spinning lightsabers, the Grand Inquisitor executed many surviving Jedi, including the respected Luminara Unduli. In a display of pure, cold, calculating strategy, he used the Jedi master’s remains to lure other Jedi into attempting a rescue. The Grand Inquisitor was a formidable combatant known for catching trained Jedi off guard with his deadly lightsaber design and ruthless aggression.

26 Asajj Ventress

First Appearance: Star Wars: Clone Wars (2004)

Asajj Ventress wielding her two red lightsabers in Star Wars

Major Feats & Abilities

Learned a wide range of lightsaber techniques and force powers from Jedi, Sith, and Nightsisters

Regularly faced off against both Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi at the same time

Asajj Ventress is one of the most resilient characters in the Star Wars universe. She was born into the Nightsister witch clan on the war-torn planet of Dathomir. She survived long enough to come under the tutelage of a Jedi Master who was sent on a long-term mission to bring peace to the planet. He taught Ventress the ways of the Force, hoping she would become a Jedi one day. But when he was killed by pirates, Ventress allowed herself to succumb to rage and grief, falling prey to the Dark Side.

Ventress became prime pickings for Count Dooku, who made her his resident assassin. Wielding dual lightsabers, she gained renown during the Clone Wars for her unpredictable fighting style. Ventress regularly came into conflict with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, having the confidence to form a pseudo-rivalry with two of the most powerful Jedi of all time. However, when the Sith inevitably betrayed her, Ventress went into business for herself, at one point single-handedly saving the Jedi with whom she used to have a blood feud.

25 Marchion Ro

First Appearance: Star Wars: The High Republic – Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule

Major Feats & Abilities

Leader of the Nihil, a band of marauders in the Outer Rim

Unleashed the Nameless

Masterminded the Great Disaster and the destruction of the Starlight Beacon

In the High Republic era, Marchion Ro became one of the greatest threats that the Jedi had ever faced. Through the use of Mari San Tekka’s hyperspace knowledge, Marchion and the Nihil wreaked havoc throughout the Outer Rim. Marchion held a particular vendetta against the Jedi, and he unleashed the Nameless, creatures with the ability to devour fear and turn Force-sensitive people to ash.

At the end of Phase I of the Star Wars: The High Republic subseries, Marchion Ro succeeded in destroying the Starlight Beacon, killing numerous Jedi and leaving many more Jedi’s fates unknown. Marchion Ro also set up a barrier between the Outer Rim and the rest of the galaxy, only allowing Nihil ships to come and go as they pleased. While fans know that the Nihil will eventually be defeated, at this point in the subseries, Marchion Ro seems to be triumphant against the Jedi and the Republic.

24 Count Dooku

First Appearance: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002)

Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Ten years after initially meeting, Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers a secret clone army crafted for the Jedi.

20th Century Fox

Major Feats & Abilities

Personally chosen as a padawan by Jedi Master Yoda, one of the most powerful Jedi of all time

Served as Confederacy of Independent Systems’ Head of State, masterminding the Separatist forces during the Clone Wars

Trained as both a Jedi and a Sith, Count Dooku had the best of both worlds. He was initially trained by Yoda, but became disillusioned with the corruption he saw all around him. Dooku left the Jedi order, reclaimed his lost title as the Count and ruler of Serenno, and became the new apprentice of Darth Sidious — receiving the title Darth Tyrannus.

Even as a Jedi, Dooku was known as a brilliant strategist and skilled lightsaber duelist. As a Sith, he further developed his talents and acquired a whole new set of powers. Dooku was particularly adept at vicious Force lightning attacks and could redirect lightning with additional lightning. Dooku demonstrated his strength in spades at the end of Attack of the Clones, easily fending off three powerful Jedi in the span of ten minutes and taking an arm off Anakin for good measure.

23 Grand Admiral Thrawn

First Appearance: Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn (1991)

Grand Admiral Thrawn looking thoughtful in Star Wars Rebels

Major Feats & Abilities

Nearly unparalleled strategist and tactician

Skilled hand-to-hand fighter both armed and unarmed

Manipulated both subordinates and superiors without the use of the Force

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Grand Admiral Thrawn

Before Thawn appeared in the Disney+ live-action series, Ahsoka, the Grand Admiral established himself pretty firmly in other Star Wars media.

Thrawn was originally a Chiss holy warrior, trained to take out his enemies with tactical genius and unrelenting dedication. Thrawn became so adept at manipulation and assassination that he was able to take out an entire platoon of stormtroopers without being seen. He then allowed himself to be caught and convinced the Emperor himself that not only did he not deserve to be executed for his crimes, but that he had earned a place in the Imperial Navy.

With his innate knowledge of how his enemies thought, Thrawn quickly rose through the ranks to become a Grand Admiral on the front lines of the Galactic Civil War. Thrawn was taken out of the Galactic Civil War by Ezra Bridger. Ezra used his connection with the Purrgil to transport Thrawn and his soldiers to another galaxy at the end of Star Wars Rebels. However, Ahsoka revealed that Thrawn had allied himself with the Dathomiri, and with Thrawn’s return to the main Star Wars galaxy, he will continue to be a threat to the fledgling New Republic.

22 Kanan Jarrus

First Appearance: Star Wars Rebels (2014)

Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars Rebels

Major Feats & Abilities

Kanan’s connection to the Force allowed him to fight and maneuver even when blinded

Used the Force to connect with a wide variety of animals and Force-sensitive creatures

Despite having very little formal training by the time the Clone Wars rolled around, the Jedi Knight Caleb Dume was thrown into the thick of combat and had to learn on the job. When Order 66 kicked off the Great Jedi Purge, his master Depa Billaba sacrificed herself to give Dume time to escape the clone troopers. After meeting and learning from the smuggler Janus Kasmir, Dume changed his identity to Kanan Jarrus and went underground — hiding his Jedi training for the better part of two decades.

It was only after Kanan joined the Rebellion and met Ezra Bridger that he decided to return to the Jedi path. Capable of taking on entire squadrons by himself, Kanan trained Ezra to become a Jedi himself and undertook the trials to become an official Jedi Knight. When Kanan was blinded by Darth Maul, he had to learn to see things through his frayed connection to the Force and became hyper-sensory, able to fight better than he had with his sight.

Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace Film Poster-1

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

136 minutes

Main Genre

Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure

20th Century Fox

Major Feats & Abilities

Survived being cut in half via pure dark side power

Battled Jedi, Sith, and Mandalorians with relative ease

Darth Maul made his memorable debut by showing off his unique dual-bladed saber in his fight against Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace. Maul butchered Qui-Gon, but was cut down by Obi-Wan when he got too cocky. He was presumed dead for over a decade before reemerging in The Clone Wars with his brother Savage Oppress by his side and a fresh new pair of bionic legs. Maul proved he was still more powerful than the average Jedi, killing several in his quest to exact revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Despite his nearly incomparable combat skills, Darth Maul couldn’t measure up to Darth Sidious, who promptly killed both his mother and brother. Maul disappeared for years, before resurfacing in a Sith temple. Even after years of exile and obsession, he fought off Inquisitors trained to hunt Jedi. For a long time, it seemed as though Maul was unkillable, but then he met his ultimate fate at the hands of Obi-Wan.

20 Avar Kriss

First Appearance: Star Wars: The High Republic – Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule

Major Feats & Abilities

Marshall of the Starlight Beacon

Able to connect multiple Jedi through the song of the Force

Star Wars: The Rare Lightsabers Set To Appear in The Acolyte

Since the Acolyte will take place during the New Republic Era, the show will feature many rare and intriguing lightsaber types.

In the High Republic era, Avar Kriss held a pivotal role in the disaster relief efforts in response to the Great Disaster, an explosion in hyperspace orchestrated by the Nihil. In order to divert debris from obliterating Hetzel Prime, Avar Kriss used her unique connection to the song of the Force to unite the Jedi’s efforts and save the planet. Her heroism led to her promotion to the Marshall of the Starlight Beacon.

In Avar Kriss’ role as the Marshall of the Starlight Beacon, she helped oversee the Jedi’s missions in the Outer Rim as Pathfinder teams explored the galaxy and the Republic made overtures to various systems to have them join the Republic as well. Most importantly, she combatted the Nihil as they continued their rampage throughout the Outer Rim. While the Nihil scored a key victory with the destruction of the Starlight Beacon, Avar has traveled behind enemy lines to hopefully stop the Nihil once and for all.

19 Qui-Gon Jinn

First Appearance: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Qui-Gon Jinn with his green lightsaber in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Major Feats & Abilities

Pioneered the ability to manifest after death as a Force spirit

Maintained a powerful connection to the Living and Cosmic Force

Qui-Gon discovered the ability to live on after death as a Force ghost, a secret he shared through visions with Master Yoda and later with his former Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Even before his death, Qui-Gon was one of the most powerful Jedi in the order. Obi-Wan openly stated that his master could have been a respected member of the Jedi High Council if he had simply followed the code, but Qui-Gon wasn’t one for rules and legislation.

Qui-Gon was so in tune with the Force he transcended the arbitrary rules the Jedi had set for themselves. He wasn’t a half-bad fighter either. Considering that the Sith hadn’t been seen in centuries, the Jedi had grown complicit in their training, to the point where even a Sith apprentice could go toe-to-toe with a Jedi Master. Despite this, Qui-Gon managed to hold his own for the better part of two fights against Darth Maul.

18 Mace Windu

First Appearance: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Mace Windu from Star Wars wielding his lightsaber

Major Feats & Abilities

Pioneered a dangerous new lightsaber combat form that blended Dark Side and Light Side techniques

Mastered the ability to see Force shatterpoints, physical and metaphorical weak points that could be leaned on to create change

Mace Windu is known as the Jedi Temple’s resident lightsaber specialist and foremost combat expert. He was singlehandedly responsible for some of the most important Republic victories in the Clone Wars and was a brilliant strategist as well as a tactful Jedi. Windu was so proficient and enamored with combat that it risked tilting him toward the Dark Side.

To counteract this risk, Windu created his own tempered fighting style that would compensate for his occasional burst of anger and animosity. Windu came moments away from winning the war when he managed to beat Darth Sidious in single combat — only failing to kill the Sith Lord due to Anakin’s untimely interference. Windu was one of the most revered Jedi in history, and his legacy lived on long after his death.

138 minutes

Main Genre

Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure

Walt Disney Studios

Lawrence Kasdan, J.J. Abrams, Michael Arndt

Major Feats & Abilities

Oversaw the restructuring of remaining Imperial forces into the First Order

Served as a vessel for the lingering power of Darth Sidious

Teased as a new ultimate villain in The Force Awakens, Snoke was later cut down rather abruptly by his apprentice Kylo Ren. Despite this unceremonious end, Supreme Leader Snoke accomplished a laundry list of incredible feats during the time after the fall of the Empire.

While not technically a Sith, Snoke has access to some of their unique powers and is shown as being more proficient in the use of Force Lightning than anyone in the series. He was able to manipulate others to an unbelievable extent, using the Force itself to join Rey and Kylo Ren without either of them questioning how it was possible. Snoke’s strength in the Force is a direct result of his being a clone designed by Darth Sidious.

16 Darth Plagueis

First Appearance: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Darth Plagueis wielding two lightsabers in Star Wars

Major Feats & Abilities

Most famous for using the Force to preserve and create life

Skilled lightsaber combatant, though he preferred to use Force trickery instead

Star Wars: 13 Sith Who Weren’t Actually Evil

Despite the fact they’ve done terrible things, many Sith from the Star Wars Universe can’t be classified as completely or inherently evil.

Darth Plagueis was Palpatine’s master. When Palpatine ultimately killed Plagueis in accordance with Sith tradition, Plagueis used the Force to induce virtual immortality. He was considered so powerful that he had only one true enemy: the Force itself. Darth Plagueis became obsessed with the idea that he’d grown too powerful and that the Force would one day betray him for abusing his control over life and death.

To preemptively counteract this hypothesized retribution, Darth Plagueis put aside all other tasks and decided to make himself unkillable by manipulating his own Midichlorians — a task that would engulf the remainder of his life. Although Plagueis never makes a physical appearance in the entire series (though he is mentioned by name), the reverence with which he is spoken shows how unbelievably powerful his unnatural abilities were.

15 Leia Organa

First Appearance: Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Major Feats & Abilities

Talented diplomat, military leader, and spy

Utilized the Force despite not having undergone much Jedi training, especially in matters of instinct and intuition

In the Star Wars original trilogy, Leia didn’t get the chance to spread her wings as much as her character deserved, a wrong that was righted in the sequels. Leia came into her own as a masterful general in charge of a vast network that fought against the First Order.

However, Leia’s undeniable military talents take a backseat to the revelation that she is arguably one of the most powerful Force-users in the Galaxy. Leia’s Force-sense is emphasized over all other abilities, but she’s proved herself to be an adept lightsaber fighter. In The Last Jedi, Leia shattered expectations by surviving in outer space for several seconds.

14 Darth Bane

First Appearance: The Phantom Menace novelization by Terry Brooks (1999)

Darth Bane staring in Star Wars Legends

Major Feats & Abilities:

Reformed the Sith Order and implemented the Rule of Two

Combined powerful lightsaber skills with ancient Sith armor

Used the pain and suffering of his enemies to heal himself using the Force

Darth Bane is one of the most infamous and powerful Sith to have ever lived, due to both Bane’s combat abilities and his Sith leadership. He was brought into the Sith Order at a time when the Sith were almost as populous as the Jedi. However, the power-hungry and duplicitous teachings of Sith doctrine led to endless infighting, allowing the Jedi to more easily subdue the Sith.

That is why, after taking control, Darth Bane established The Rule of Two. This rule dictates that there can only be two Sith, the Master and the Apprentice. This allows for the continuity of Sith teachings and keeps them from self-destructing. Darth Bane had a long history in Star Wars Legends, much of which has been repurposed and folded into the current Disney canon.

13 Ahsoka Tano

First Appearance: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)

Star Wars The Clone Wars TV Show Poster

Release Date
October 3, 2008

Tom Kane, Dee Bradley Baker, Matt Lanter, james arnold taylor, Ashley Eckstein, Matthew Wood

Main Genre

Animation, Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure

George Lucas

Major Feats & Abilities

Fought on the front lines of the Clone Wars, commanding troops even as a Padawan

Evaded capture by both the Jedi and the new Empire to survive long after the end of the Clone Wars

Ahsoka Tano made a name for herself not just as Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice but as a valiant warrior who protected her soldiers and outgrew the Jedi Order’s way of thinking. She was particularly adept at integrating her Force powers into her fights, a tricky task considering she was known to dual-wield in the Jar’Kai fashion.

Ahsoka was so well practiced with two lightsabers that she was able to fend off both Vader and Sidious simultaneously. She also took on the four-armed General Grievous alone as a teenager and survived. As an adult, she was able to beat multiple inquisitors at once with ease and she had become in tune enough with the Force to experience premonitions and visions at will.

12 Obi-Wan Kenobi

First Appearance: Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Obi-Wan Kenobi wielding his lightsaber in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

Major Feats & Abilities

Extremely skilled in lightsaber combat, among the greatest duelists in the Jedi Order

Highly in tune with the Force, able to use a variety of Force abilities both in and out of combat

10 Reasons Star Wars Should Be A TV Series

Star Wars originally succeeded as a movie trilogy, but Disney should consider telling Star Wars stories strictly through television.

Obi-Wan started his path to greatness after witnessing the death of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, and became the first Jedi in centuries to defeat a Sith. Granted, Darth Maul didn’t exactly die from the encounter, but the victory assured Obi-Wan’s ascension within the Jedi ranks. Over the next ten years, he cultivated a reputation as a reliable, steadfast Jedi and mentor to Anakin Skywalker.

During the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan became a general in the Republic army, using his knack for clearheaded thinking to rescue Chancellor Palpatine and defeat the nigh-unkillable General Grievous. At the end of the war, he defeated his apprentice, who had grown even more powerful as Darth Vader. While in exile, Obi-Wan reached an enlightened state and managed to finally kill Darth Maul before giving Luke Skywalker a scant few hours of training which would lead him on the path to greatness himself.

11 Kylo Ren

First Appearance: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Kylo Ren in front of the first order army in Star Wars

Major Feats & Abilities

Took on a similar role to his grandfather Darth Vader as an enforcer for the First Order

Formed one half of a powerful Force dyad with Rey, helping defeat Palpatine once and for all

Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, is undoubtedly powerful. He managed to kill his master Snoke with a surprise attack without the latter foreseeing it. Kylo Ren is more proficient with a lightsaber than anyone of his generation. He easily sliced up Finn and a room full of elite soldiers, only losing a fight to Rey because he was dealing with an injury from Chewbacca’s bowcaster.

Kylo Ren is fairly evenly matched with Rey in terms of Force powers, a fact demonstrated multiple times in their relationship as a Force dyad. But Kylo’s Force abilities extend into unventured territory as far as Star Wars goes — he was first introduced to audiences by catching a blaster bolt in midair, literally catching and freezing it in place while he interrogated Poe. It took formidable Force powers to pull off a stunt like that.
