This episode, while at work, Saku is approached by Kaoru, her boss. He tells her that his niece, Yume, wants to invite her to her birthday party. Saku thinks this is adorable and eagerly takes the invitation, but freezes when she sees that Yukichi also got an invitation. She can’t show up without him, of course.
Saku goes home and gives the invitation to Yukichi, but tells him they can’t go. Yukichi starts immediately looking at what sort of snacks to bring, because he’s hellbent on going to the party. Saku is panicking and asks him how he’d explain being a humungous cat, and he points that on the invitation, it says it’s a costume party.
Saku goes to bed and goes to work again, but when she comes back home, she’s about to tell Yukichi that even though it’s a costume party, he can’t go. Yukichi distracts her from her determination by showing her the present he’ll be giving to Yume (a Yukichi-shaped doll) and a taste-test of the food he’ll be bringing to the party. Saku soon forgets her determination and they end up going.
Yukichi makes Saku a mouse-themed outfit. When they get to Yume’s home on the day of the party, Saku is starting to get cold feet — but when other guests arrive and urge her inside, she has no choice but to stay.
Saku wonders if the others will wonder how Yukichi’s “Costume” is such a high-quality one. But Yukichi’s thought ahead; he’s affixed a zipper to his back to make it look like he’s a man wearing a suit. This seems to be enough to ward off the guests’ suspicions.
Saku meets Kaoru’s older sister, AKA Yume’s mother. She tells Saku a bit about Kaoru, and asks if she’d like to see his childhood bedroom, since this is the house Kaoru grew up in. Saku declines out of embarrassment, but it’s cool to see Saku’s relationship with Kaoru slowly begin to grow.
Yukichi meets Yume’s Grandma, a woman with poor eyesight. He shakes her hand, and she feels Yukichi’s paws. She begins reminiscing about a black cat she owned a long time ago. Saku stumbles onto the scene and begins to apologize (for what, I’m not sure) and the old woman tells Saku that she’s lucky to have a lucky cat like Yukichi.
The final sequence shows Saku drinking too much at a party, wandering home and falling asleep at the park she found Yukichi at. Yukichi finds her.
Opinions / Analysis
This show is literally teasing me with the romantic subtext between Saku and Kaoru. I need a date sequence YESTERDAY. They’re so cute and I just — I need to see more.
Regardless, this episode had a lot of emotional beats in it. With the Grandma whose eyesight is leaving her, remembering a dead pet, and even Saku and Yukichi constantly reminiscing about their first encounter, just overall there were a lot of emotional things here.
Not that I mind! Overall, it was a good episode for sure.
