The director of The Marvels, Nia DaCosta, clarifies the controversies surrounding the film after a report on the alleged crisis of the MCU revealed that she was working on other project while the movie was still in post-production.
Earlier this month, Variety published an article detailing information about an alleged ongoing crisis at Marvel Studios, affecting different projects within the company. Among everything that the article included, it briefly talked about The Marvels, the next film in the franchise that will hit theaters this week and for which projections are not looking hopeful.
However, what the report focused on was the conflicts with the director of the Captain Marvel sequel, who was working on another film even though The Marvels was not yet finished. In an interview for the YouTube channel Jake’s Takes, DaCosta explained the reasons why she had to abandon post-production on the film:
“For me personally, it was that they moved the date of the film four different times. They knew the entire time that I had an obligation—a green-lit movie with people who were waiting for me. And I pushed that and then I pushed it again and then I pushed it again. Eventually, we all knew that if [The Marvels] pushes again, I’m not going to be in LA to do the rest of this in person. By the time I left to start prep on my next film, everyone was so clear about what the film was, what we wanted. It really wasn’t this dramatic sort of thing people are thinking it is.”
The film DaCosta began working on during post-production on The Marvels is Hedda, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s acclaimed stage play Hedda Gabler. The movie stars MCU alum Tessa Thompson, and the story centers on a woman who is trapped in a marriage and a life she doesn’t want.
Nia DaCosta Wanted Adam Warlock to Appear in The Marvels
The Marvels, just like the Guardians of the Galaxy films, are some of the stories that explore the cosmic side of the MCU the most. For this reason, DaCosta initially wanted to include a character who ultimately ended up appearing in the most recent installment of the adventures of James Gunn’s group of outcasts. This is Adam Warlock, who was played by Will Poulter.
In the same interview, the director of The Marvels revealed her intentions to include the hero, long before knowing that he would be part of Gunn’s film:
“Actually, interestingly, one of the first things I pitched way back when, was having Adam Warlock and time travel in the movie. But Adam was going to be in Guardians 3 and I think they have enough time travel in Loki, so we didn’t do that. But we do have some fun stuff in that realm in the movie. My big plan, which is part of what’s amazing about doing something in such a big universe with so many films, it’s like ‘Well, if we bring in Adam Warlock here, we bring him into the present and then in another movie we can understand where we was coming from.”
The Marvels hits theaters on November 10. Check out the latest teaser for the movie below.
