We’ve still got a good few months before the end of 2023, but let’s go over some of the best male characters we’ve seen so far this year.
Junichiro Kubota (Tomo-chan is a Girl!)

Tomo-chan’s love interest Jun starts off this list. With the stature and build that he has, it’s easy to mistake him for a thirty-year old bricklayer – in reality he’s a fifteen-year old high school student. Jun’s shift in character towards the end of the series as he began to realise his true feelings for Tomo is some of the best character development we’ve seen this year. It’s a shame that a season two is unlikely due to the story wrapping up at the end of the first season. The ending was incredible though, so it’s not all bad!
Gabimaru (Hell’s Paradise)

Hell’s Paradise was packed full of awesome fight scenes, with Gabimaru the Hollow being the star of most of them. His resilience in battle combined with his unique “ninpo” attacks make him a feared opponent to anyone. Having his desire to return to his wife as his reason for doing everything is brilliant, especially considering the plot twist that we were left with at the end of the first season. Season two has been confirmed, let’s hope we don’t have to wait long!
Aqua Hoshino (Oshi no Ko)

Aqua is a favourite for many this year, and for good reason. It’s no surprise to fans when the revenge trope is used in yet another anime, but it feels a little different with Aqua. He’s got all the traits that we’ve seen before – cold, standoffish, set on his goals, but still he feels unique. If Aqua’s father is the one who was responsible for Ai’s demise, it might just open up a whole new side of him. Season two has been confirmed!
Mash Burnedead (Mashle: Magic and Muscles)

The Harry Potter inspired world of Mashle features Mash Burnedead as its main protagonist. Having no magical blood within him, Mash has already been set up for failure in a world where magic is everything. His journey throughout the first season of Mashle was fun and, well, magical.
Muichiro Tokito (Demon Slayer)

We would’ve put Tanjiro here, but Muichiro really stole the show during the Swordsmith Village arc. The introduction to his troubled past and his story up until the present was just what we needed for his fight against Gyokko to be taken to another level. His past is a testament to his strength, courage, and unwavering determination as a Hashira.
Thorfinn (Vinland Saga)

Season two of Vinland Saga is one of the best seasons of anime to ever air, ever. Those who say that the reduction of fight scenes compared to the first season made it boring missed the message of the season. Thorfinn‘s journey from a bloodthirsty warrior driven by revenge to a man who only wants peace is one of the most insightful, inspiring transformations in all anime.
Osamu Dazai (Bungo Stray Dogs)

Bungo Stray Dogs fifth season has been one of the best so far, but maybe not for Dazai. He’s spent the entire time thus far trapped inside Mersault, a high security prison which is said to be the world’s best. Despite this, Dazai has shown an extraordinary amount of mental prowess in this season during his battle of the brains with the equally intelligent Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Izumi Miyamura (Horimiya)

Horimiya’s spin off series “The Missing Pieces” is one of the greatest romcoms to air this summer. Getting a deeper insight into the cast’s lives and interests that we didn’t get in the original series has been sooo much fun every week. Miyamura himself has displayed his tenacity when faced with Hori’s random outbursts, and even made the first move to reconnect with her after an argument.
Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)

Soul Reaper Ichigo Kurosaki returned to screens for the first time since 2012 last year, and has come back once more in July of this year for the second cour of the Thousand Year Blood War.
Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)

You really thought we weren’t going to include Gojo? The first five episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season detailed Gojo’s past, and Geto’s descent into evil. Getting to see a younger Gojo and his abilities in his early days was super cool. Gojo is for sure the most popular anime character this year, and for good reason.
Honorable Mentions
Rudeus Greyrat
Kiyoka Kudou
Akira Tendou
