Spider-Man’s Cut Doctor Strange 2 Appearance Revealed & Why It Didn’t Happen

Summary

  • The MCU originally planned to include a cameo appearance by Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before schedule changes due to COVID-19.
  • The movies were supposed to have interconnected moments, with Doctor Strange and America Chavez appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Spider-Man having a brief cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
  • The release schedule changes caused alterations to the plot and the roles of certain characters, such as Ned Leeds stepping in as Spider-Man’s magic apprentice instead of America Chavez.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was not supposed to be the only recent appearance for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, as he was originally meant to show up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Holland recently concluded his Spider-Man trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a major multiverse event film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which involved Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in a vital role. However, it appears the two heroes were supposed to have also interacted in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

On Twitter, @SpiderMan_Newz shared a snippet from an interview where Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness costume designer Graham Churchyard reveals Spider-Man was set to appear in the movie.

According to Churchyard, Spider-Man would have a “very brief cameo appearance” in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ story. Churchyard also mentioned that “Doctor Strange in his new costume and America Chavez were supposed to go intoSpider-Man: No Way Home. The Spider-Man and America Chavez cameos were cut due to the COVID-19 pandemic shifting film schedules, as Spider-Man: No Way Home was once releasing after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Check out the full quote below:

“Spider-Man: No Way Home was supposed to come out after Multiverse [of Madness], and then with COVID [changes], it then came out before. So Doctor Strange in his new costume and America Chavez were supposed to go into [No Way Home], and Spider-Man was supposed to come in – for a very brief cameo appearance into Multiverse. And then, you know, COVID just shook it all up.”

How The MCU’s Release Moves Changed Spider-Man: No Way Home

Peter Parker in the Mirror Dimension in Spider-Man No Way Home

The COVID-19 pandemic caused several movies and series to be delayed, and the MCU did not escape that wave of schedule shifts. Spider-Man: No Way Home was originally set to be released in July 2021, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was to premiere a couple of months before it, that May. Being that the Spider-Man trilogy finale would have come after the second Doctor Strange movie — not five months before it — a connective tissue between the two movies due to Strange’s role in Holland’s film was to be expected.

Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s cast featured multiple actors from the past two live-action Spider-Man movie franchises, including Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their versions of Spider-Man. While the duo was brought in to help Holland’s Peter Parker through Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds using Doctor Strange’s sling ring, that would have been different had the movie kept its original release date.

America Chavez would have played a role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as the character would have already debuted in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As that movie’s ending revealed, America had been studying magic at Kamar-Taj, which is why it makes sense that she was the one who was originally going to bring in the Spider-Man variants in No Way Home. Due to the movies’ dates shifting, Ned Leeds ended up taking Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s magic apprentice role, as America had yet to debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, changing the Spider-Man film in a key way.
