Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve promises a tragic ending that sets up Dune: Part Three.
With Dune: Part Two‘s release date edging closer, Denis Villeneuve alongside his stars Timothee Chalamet (Paul Atreides) and Zendaya (Chani) have heated up discourse about the possibility of Dune: Part Three releasing. Villeneuve described the upcoming Dune: Part Two’s story-line as ending on a darker and more tragic note compared to the events in Frank Herbert’s novel from which the Dune films are adapted from.
Denis Villeneuve casts No Time to Die actor Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot for Dune: Part Two, his upcoming science-fiction sequel to 2021’s Dune.
“All of the elements are there,” Villeneuve stated. “But I think the movie adaptation is more tragic than the book. The way that Part Two ends… it would create a total balance and equilibrium to finish Paul’s storyline in what we could say in Part Three.”
Will Dune Get a Trilogy?
Villeneuve’s statements were supported by his main star, Timothee Chalamet, who discussed how he’s on board for a Dune film trilogy, stating, “The idea excites me very much. If the time and opportunity comes to complete the story with Messiah, I think we’re all super-enthusiastic about that.” Zendaya added, “Denis is an artist, and doesn’t like to share things until he’s got it figured out. So whenever he’s ready, we’re all keenly ready to hear what his vision is.”
Dune Part One deviated from the novel in some ways but kept the primary relationships and plot points intact, so what does that say about Part Two?
Villeneuve has continuously expressed keen interest in creating a third installment in the Dune series, adapting the events of Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah. Villenueve mentioned in an interview with Empire magazine his aspiration to craft a trilogy, stating that there are initial plans for a third film. Villeneuve confirmed to the South Korean press that work on the screenplay for Dune: Messiah is underway, although it’s not yet completed. However, Villeneuve hinted at the possibility of working on another project before diving directly into the third film. The realization of a third Dune movie hinges on the success of the upcoming Dune: Part Two at the box office, although the cinematic Dune franchise has already received an expansion with the upcoming Dune: Prophecy prequel TV series.
Although Villenueve discussed the differences in the changed tones between the book’s ending and the film ending of Dune: Part 2, the director previously stated his desire to stay close to the books as much as possible, stating “When you adapt, it’s an act of vandalism,” “You will change things. But from the beginning, I said to the crew, to the studio, to the actors: ‘The bible is the book. We will, as much as possible, stay as close as possible to the book.’ I want people who love the book to feel like we put a camera in their minds.”
Dune: Part 2 is set to be released on March 1, 2024.
