Nicki Minaj Addresses Soulja Boy’s Complaint Over VMAs Performance

Nicki Minaj and Soulja Boy have cleared the air after a misunderstanding over one of her performances at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

The “Crank That” rapper recently took to Instagram Live and expressed his frustration at not being invited to join the New York MC at the annual gathering for her production of “Itty Bitty Piggy,” which samples the internet sensation’s 2008 hit, “Donk.”

On Monday (November 6), both stars hopped on Instagram Live to discuss the matter head on rather than have the tension escalate.

Nicki got straight to it, saying: “I would’ve loved nothing more than to have you there. This is a prime fucking example … of how shit can go left real fast. I don’t know if you know, but I ended up having to perform three times and hosting a show and doing a red carpet, right? It was at the last minute that I even decided what I was gonna perform in that slot.”

Soulja responded: “It’s never no disrespect to the queen. We love and support everything you do. I just felt a little certain type of way with MTV, but you got it cleared up, it’s all good.”

Check out the pair’s conversation below:

During the same conversation, the Pink Friday hitmaker also took a moment to explain to Soulja that he had misinterpreted J. Cole’s comments about his music and that they weren’t patronizing to begin with.

“[J. Cole] said that he had to keep it real with himself and admit that people like you are what was really keeping the wave going and like really bringing the energy,” she said. “He basically gave you props … So what the fuck was you on when you misinterpreted it, and now you stand here doing the most again?”

Soon after, he took to social media and issued an apology to the Dreamville boss, writing: “Nicki just told me I took what he said wrong. And that he was showing love. So I’m gonna let it go. My bad y’all I really thought dude was hating on me.”

He added: “My bad dawg. @JColeNC sorry for the confusion. keep doing your shit we from two different worlds. I stand on what I stand on, it’s hard coming from where I did man. I dealt with a lot of hate my whole career so it was just messed to think it would come from you.”

The conversation about Soulja Boy began when Cole appeared on Lil Yachty’s A Safe Place podcast last week, during which he talked about how he has humbled his outlook over the years. In doing so, he even reflected on how he used to be uppity about what Hip Hop should be rather than what it was turning into.

“Around the time Soulja Boy came out, I don’t know how this happened but I had a realization within myself ’cause I’m hearing that shit and I’m like, ‘Man this shit, Soulja Boy tell em,” he began. “Sounds crazy to say now ’cause it’s such a classic to me, but at that time, I had resistance. Similar to when you came out and your class came out, I had resistance.”

He went on: “‘Nah that’s not the thing that I love. Like what? Y’all fucking with this?’ I was one of them. But there was a part of me that had a realization. I was proud of myself for this realization. So I was like, ‘Bruh, you a hater. Like yo, you are literally hating. You know you like this shit.’”

Soon after the episode went live, Soulja Boy took to social media and wrote in a since-deleted tweet: “N-ggaz always hated on me nothing new. Him and big sean was on some hating shit. But fuck them im still lit [fire emoji].”

He then followed it up with another post that has now been taken down, writing: “Aye bruh don’t speak on me @JColeNC I’m not lil pump, drake, or none of these rapper niggaz. On God.”
