- Lindsey Anderson Beer, writer and director of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, hopes her script for a sequel to The Wizard of Oz gets made after being proud of the dark yet whimsical tone she achieved.
- The success of previous films and adaptations set in the magical land of Oz suggests that Beer’s version of a sequel would be well-received by audiences.
- Beer is also working on a Sleepy Hollow reboot, drawing inspiration from the original short story and delving deeper into its mythology and true ghost stories from the Hudson Valley.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines writer and director Lindsey Anderson Beer would love to see a The Wizard of Oz sequel she penned come to life. Beer, who recently made her directorial feature debut with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines – a prequel to Stephen King’s classic horror novel Pet Sematary – has served as a writer on numerous projects, including Sierra Burgess is a Loser and The Magic Order; she also co-wrote Pet Sematary: Bloodlines alongside King and Jeff Buhler.
Beer’s also written for several IP based projects, including Transformers, Fast and Furious, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and an upcoming Sleepy Hollow adaptation (more on that one later). During a recent conversation with Dread Central, while promoting Bloodlines, Beer was asked about the IPs she has worked on when she said:
“The list is too long, and in Hollywood, television is so fast, but features are so slow, and sometimes it can take a decade or 20 years for something to get made, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is one I really hope actually gets made because I was really proud of that script. It’s not easy to make a ‘Wizard of Oz’ sequel that feels worth making, but I was proud of that one.”
Tonally, Beer said, The Wizard of Oz-scribed sequel “was a mix between darkness and the whimsy of the original,” noting that it contained elements of darkness that “a modern-day audience may need to feel realistic.”
The original The Wizard of Oz, based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, debuted in 1939. The film is largely considered one of the greatest films of all time and is universally beloved. Following the original film that starred Judy Garland, numerous films have revisited the magical land of Oz: 1972’s Journey Back to Oz (which featured Garland’s daughter Liza Minnelli as Dorothy), Sidney Lumet’s 1978 The Wiz (featuring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Lena Horn, and Richard Pryor), Disney’s Return to Oz from 1985, and Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful which served as a spiritual prequel to the original film and debuted in 2013. All iterations of the Oz narrative have been embraced by audiences, signaling that Beer’s version would be well-received, should it ever come to fruition.
More Sleepy Hollow is Headed Our Way
During the same interview, Beer discussed her next project, an adaptation of Sleepy Hollow. While Beer had nothing but praise for Tim Burton’s 1999 award-winning film that starred Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, she says the upcoming project will be notably different, drawing more from the original 1820 short story by Washington Irving:
“I’m working on a ‘Sleepy Hollow’ reboot for Paramount, and that’s really fun,” Beer explained. “I read the short story in elementary school, and I was definitely obsessed with the Tim Burton movie as well. It delves a lot more into the original stories, mythology, and true ghost stories from the Hudson Valley, and it’s a fun one.”
Along with writing, Beer also produces alongside Todd Garner and Spencer Walken of Broken Road Productions.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is currently available on Paramount+. The film is set in 1969 and follows a young Jud Crandall (Jackson White) and his childhood friends as they band together to confront an ancient evil that has gripped their hometown of Ludlow. Alongside White, the film stars Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, and Natalie Alyn Lind and features Pam Grier and David Duchovny.
