Early in 2023, Max announced the desire to reboot Harry Potter as a TV series, and the plan is moving forward at Max as writers begin pitching ideas.
Not even a year later, the Harry Potter TV series is starting to gain momentum. Deadline reports that writers have begun pitching ideas for the upcoming reboot and finding ways to adapt J.K. Rowling’s seven books. There have been several writers who pitched ideas to Warner Bros. Discovery, including Martha Hillier (The Last Kingdom), Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters), Tom Moran (The Devil’s Hour), and Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes).
Tom Felton’s second Harry Potter post of the year includes a reunion with his on-screen dad, Jason Isaacs.
All the writers are a mix of British and Americans, and the outlet claims Max commissioned a different group of writers to share their pitch on their vision of how the Harry Potter reboot should come to the small screen. The first round of pitches reportedly happened in Los Angeles, and the top choices will have another round in the UK. However, the project is still in its early stages, and many writers could end up being involved in the show.
It’s unclear if the series’ creator, J.K. Rowling, has been involved in the selection process for the writers. However, Rowling will be involved in the reboot, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the author. Because of Rowling’s involvement, some fans also planned to boycott the upcoming adaptation.
The Harry Potter reboot will need to give Hogwarts a fresh coat of paint if it is to create an individual identity, separate from the Wizarding films.
Everything to Know About the Upcoming Harry Potter Reboot
Max confirmed the Harry Potter reboot on April 12, 2023. The streaming service will provide another adaptation of the seven Harry Potter books, independent of the eight films and its prequel franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Although the Harry Potter movies are beloved by many, particularly because of their stellar cast with amazing chemistry and talent, but also because of their nostalgic factor, they were far from perfect.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed the upcoming series will be a “decade-long one,” which means it will have enough time to flesh out the characters, set up the story, as well as to introduce Harry Potter characters or scenes that the original film missed, which is enough to generate excitement and interest from the original fans of the franchise. Adapting the books into a ten-season series would be a gamble, but it could also become a more faithful adaptation than the films.
The series will be produced by Brontë Film and TV, the production company chaired by Rowling’s agent Neil Blair, and Warner Bros. Television. Brontë Film’s CEO Ruth Kenley-Letts will also act as executive producer.
Since the project is still in its early stages, it’s unclear when the series will premiere. No announcement regarding its cast has been made, but the original actors from the Harry Potter films are believed not to be involved in the reboot. However, the fact that the series is starting to get traction is a good thing, and Max might start releasing more information on it in the near future, and the project might enter development soon.
