The upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot is expected to face major casting difficulties according to Warner Bros. Television chairperson Channing Dungey.
.Dungey’s comments follow recent reports that revealed the Harry Potter TV series is currently in active development at Max, with Warner Bros. Discovery confirming that several writers have pitched story and character concepts for the adaptation. In an interview with Variety, Dungey addressed the rumors and speculation surrounding the reboot, describing the casting interest from fans and the media as being too early, as Max is still currently in the process of securing the role of a showrunner for the show.
From Death Eaters to the young pupils of Hogwarts, Harry Potter showcases the most powerful witches and wizards in the Wizarding World.
“The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those (casting) conversations. We’re in conversations with a number of different writers to figure out who’s going to be the person to lead that franchise for us,” Dungey told Variety.
The First Two Books Provide the Biggest Casting Challenges
Dungey went on to highlight the particular difficulty of casting younger actors for the first two books (The Philosopher’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets) with the main character’s ages in those books being in the range of eleven or twelve. “The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12.” The challenging casting process has been an expected factor for some after Max released a statement describing the reboot as being a decade long commitment, which would require an almost flawless decision-making as the young actors will grow with the characters they’re portraying as seen in the original film franchise.
The Harry Potter reboot will need to give Hogwarts a fresh coat of paint if it is to create an individual identity, separate from the Wizarding films.
Max’s statement reads: “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
Harry Potter‘s original iconic trio of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) were each eleven, twelve and ten during the filming of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The television reboot will be the second official live action adaptation of the franchise, following the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The Harry Potter TV reboot is currently in development.
The Harry Potter franchise follows the adventure of a young boy introduced a whole new world of magic, mayhem and darkness. Traversing the obstacles in his path, young Harry’s rise to heroics pits him against Lord Voldemort, one of the most dangerous wizards in the world and all his minions.
