Godzilla Minus One Director Teases Potential Sequel

Godzilla Minus One getting a direct sequel is a possibility, but for director Takashi Yamazaki, it doesn’t seem very likely.

Following its release in theaters, Godzilla Minus One has become an immense success. It has been smashing box office records in addition to drawing widespread acclaim worldwide from both audiences and critics. This kind of success may lead to some interest at Toho in developing a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, perhaps by bringing back some of the same characters. In a new interview with HJWeb, Takashi Yamazaki shared that he didn’t currently have any storyline ideas in mind. However, with that noted, he’d still be “a little sad” to see another filmmaker get the helm for the next Godzilla movie, as he “would like” to direct a follow-up film, though he figures that another standalone movie is more likely to happen.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Rating Teases Action-Packed Creature Combat

Legendary’s upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire receives its official film rating, ahead of its theatrical release in March.

“No, there is no such story at all [for Godzilla Minus One 2],” Yamazaki said, translated. “But I might be a little sad if someone is chosen for the next work. When someone says, ‘This is the person who will direct the next Godzilla,’ I think, ‘Ah!’ And when someone says, ‘Please do it,’ I think, ‘Ah!’ (laughs) If I were to direct the next movie, I would like to do a sequel to this one, but since there have been two standalone Godzilla movies in a row, I think the next movie will probably have to include an enemy monster.”

Godzilla Minus One Could Become an Oscar Winner

Godzilla MInus One was just recently nominated for an Academy Award for the Best Visual Effects category. In addition to writing and directing the film, Takashi Yamazaki also worked on the visual effects alongside Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Tatsuji Nojima. The nomination was the first time a Godzilla movie has been acknowledged at the Academy Awards, and it’s also the first time that a Japanese-language film was nominated for the Best Visual Effects category.

In part due to the popularity of the film, a remastered version in black and white has also been developed. This version was previously released in Japanese theaters and is imminently releasing domestically. Yamazaki has teased that this version of the movie is “way scarier” than the color version, as it gives the film a documentary-like feel, making it feel more realistic.

The black-and-white remastered version of Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, premieres in U.S. theaters on Jan. 26, 2024.
