Games of Thrones Star Explains Why HBO Series Created a ‘Lot of Barriers’ for His Career

Games of Thrones alum Iwan Rheon opened up about the aftermath of playing Ramsay Bolton in the acclaimed HBO drama.

It has been seven years since Rheon last portrayed Ramsay Bolton during Game of Thrones Season 6’s iconic “Battle of the Bastards” episode, where the sadistic and psychotic villain was ultimately defeated by Jon Snow and Sansa Stark. Speaking with Radio Times, the Welsh actor discussed the impact of the show on his acting career, admitting that it created “barriers” to him in terms of the roles he’s been getting. “There’s no other way of looking at it. Because of the magnitude of the show, it did loads for my career,” Rheon said. “But it brought a lot of barriers as well. All of a sudden you’re just getting offered lots of parts where they want you to do the same thing… Well, exactly! I was like: ‘Can I play a nice guy, please?’

Game of Thrones Animated Spinoffs Teased by George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin shares a new update on the planned animated spinoffs for Game of Thrones.

After his time on Game of Thrones ended, Rheon appeared in several shows, including a main role in the widely-panned Inhuman series from Marvel Television, in which he played the role of Maximus. In April 2022, Rheon expressed his interest in reprising Maximus again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ahead of former co-star Anson Mount’s Black Bolt appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He will next be seen in Roland Emmerich’s Those About to Die series, which will follow Ancient Rome’s gladiators.

Following the official conclusion of Game of Thrones in 2019, HBO greenlit the prequel spinoff House of the Dragon, based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel about the history of the Targaryen family. The prequel has already wrapped up filming the upcoming Season 2, which is slated to premiere sometime this year. Season 2 is expected to open with the Blacks (Rhaenyra’s team)’s violent retaliation against the Greens (Alicent/ Aegon II’s team) following the heartbreaking death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys during the Season 1 finale.

House of the Dragon Star Addresses the Impact of Co-Showrunner’s Exit on Season 2

House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke reveals how the Game of Thrones spinoff dealt with the departure of co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Promises More Dragon Battles

As the bloody civil war between siblings Rhaenyra and Aegon II begins, House of the Dragon Season 2 will include more battle sequences involving dragons. In a previous interview, cast member Ewan Mitchell teased the never-before-seen chaos that will fall upon Westeros. “I mean, you guys know… when a Targaryen is born the gods toss a coin,” he said. “One side is greatness and the other side is madness. We’ve got a whole family of these guys. So this is possibly the craziest you will ever see Westeros.”

In a previous interview, House of the Dragon stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam believed that the upcoming epic battle scenes in Season 2 might potentially top Game of Thrones’ most memorable episodes. “If I didn’t top those episodes, I’d still be very proud of what we’ve done,” he said. “But we haven’t given up, and the desire is always to go bigger and better — but to not repeat. We don’t want ‘Battle of the Bastards 2’ or ‘Hardhome 2’ or ‘Spoils of War 2.’ We’re always trying to find new sequences we can get our teeth into.”

House of the Dragon Season 1 is available on Max.
