Fantastic Four Fixes a Glaring Problem With the MCU

  • The Marvel Cinematic Universe lacks a romantic element.
  • The Fantastic Four can fulfill multiple romantic roles.
  • Each member of the Fantastic Four brings something unique to the MCU in terms of romance.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe started off strong in the romance department with iconic relationships such as Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, Thor and Jane Foster, and more. However, as Phase 4 of the MCU concluded, the franchise has had a dearth of romantic couples. This absence has left a void waiting to be filled by a dynamic power couple.

That’s where the Fantastic Four come in. With Reed Richards and Sue Storm headlining the First Family of Marvel, fans can expect to see a lot of family-like dynamics that one might have seen in MCU franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy. However, that’s not all, as the film is likely to delve deep into the iconic couple, while also exploring the romantic endeavors of their fellow team members.

Reed Richards and Sue Storm Are the Next MCU Power Couple

Reed and Sue Richards Marriage in Marvels from Marvel Comics

Avengers: Endgame saw the conclusion of the journeys of both Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. Along with their heroic arcs, their on-screen romance also came to an end. While Stark sacrificed himself to save the universe, Rogers went back in time to fulfill the dance promise he made to Peggy Carter. Since then, other major relationships have crumbled. Thor lost Jane Foster to cancer in Thor: Love and Thunder. MJ’s memory of Peter Parker was erased after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and despite Scarlet Witch’s best efforts, she couldn’t bring Vision back.

Currently, there are a few relationships that remain strong. This includes Ant-Man and the Wasp, Loki and Sylvie, and Doctor Strange and Christine Palmer. However, none of these couples have tugged the heartstrings of MCU fans. But that could all change with the arrival of Reed Richards and Sue Storm. While other characters in Marvel Comics have had different love interests, Richards and Storm have always felt like a match made in heaven. Despite their struggles as a married couple, the two have always been able to fix their problems, and it’s very likely that their relationship will be explored heavily in the upcoming film.

The Thing Is Part of One of Marvel’s Most Endearing Relationships

The Thing and Alicia Masters embrace each other at their wedding.

While Reed Richards and Sue Storm are the IT couple of the Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm probably has the cutest romance of them all. For years, The Thing tried his best to revert from his rock-like appearance to appear much more human. Despite having one of the greatest minds on planet Earth by his side, Grimm never found a permanent cure. Due to his appearance, it seemed like love was out of the equation for The Thing.

However, that changed with the arrival of Alicia Masters. After becoming an ally of the Fantastic Four, the two became one of the most wholesome aspects of the team, with Masters never having an issue with Grimm’s appearance. Despite their ups and downs while dating, the couple eventually got married, and they later adopted Jo-Venn and N’Kalla. Just like Richards and Storm, Grimm and Masters are another rock-solid couple that can be part of the MCU. While other relationships in the franchise have ended for various reasons, it’s fair to say that these two couples won’t have any reasons to break up.

Johnny Storm Brings the Playboy Avatar to the MCU

Along with fewer power couples, the MCU also lacks characters that carry the aura of a casanova. The MCU originally started off with its biggest playboy in Tony Stark, with Iron Man showcasing his abilities to woo even his detractors. However, since he began dating Pepper Potts, the MCU hasn’t filled the gap left by the “Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist.”

The Fantastic Four also covers that aspect with Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch. The hotshot has had his fair share of escapades with the ladies in Marvel Comics. Compared to Reed and Sue’s picture-perfect relationship, Johnny’s endeavors have been much more carefree, as he uses his charm to seduce several women. This includes superpowered beings like Lyja the Skrull, and Frankie Raye aka Nova. His flirtatious personality also provides a nice balance to the picture-perfect relationships of the Fantastic Four’s remaining members.

With love stories continuing to dwindle in the MCU, it’s evident that the franchise needs a love boost. The Fantastic Four provides just that, with the relationships of its various members being a major highlight. In the end, it will be interesting to see how the film will portray the balance between the personal lives and the superhero duties of these characters.
