Fans Are Not Happy About the Hazbin Hotel Recast

Summary

  • Hazbin Hotel fans were unhappy when the entire original cast of voice actors was replaced for the Prime adaptation, feeling it was a slap to their faces and to the original voice actors.
  • Speculation suggests that the reason for the recasting is because the new cast consists of professional singers and Broadway stars, aligning with the musical element of Hazbin Hotel.
  • The replacement of voice actors may be due to Hazbin Hotel’s transition from an indie animation to a larger production, which would naturally bring changes, although some fans still feel strongly about the original voice actors.

Welcome, one and all, to the Hazbin Hotel. Hope you have your reservations prepared for January 19, 2024! Hazbin Hotel comes to the small screen via Prime Video under the production of A24. It’s been four years since VivziePop’s adult indie animation pilot was uploaded to YouTube. Since then, the franchise has seen an ongoing spinoff series on YouTube called Helluva Boss, merchandise for both shows, and an ever-growing fandom. Fans couldn’t be more excited to see the Hazbin Hotel characters again, but while the faces are familiar, the voices are not.

The entirety of Hazbin Hotel has been recast with new voice actors. When news spread about this, fans were bewildered. The bewilderment then led to confusion, then unhappiness. Why, do you ask? The pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel already had a talented cast of voice actors that the fans loved as much as they did the characters. So when they discovered they were all recast, it felt like a slap to the face, not just for the fans but for the original voice actors. At least, that’s how the fans perceived it. They might not be entirely wrong.

Why Was Everyone Recast?

Even now, there is no direct answer as to why the whole original cast was recast. Fans have speculated that the reasoning is because of the musical element of Hazbin Hotel. The series is musically inclined, along with dark humor and adult content. The OG voice actors had phenomenal singing talent, so why were they not called in for the Prime adaptation?

There is a recent post on Reddit that fans have been using to talk about why. Their conclusion is simply because most (if not all) of the new cast are professional singers and/or Broadway stars. For an animated musical series, it would make sense for the characters to be recast with actors who sing for a living. Still, the OG voice actors were talented at singing as well. Just because they are not on Broadway doesn’t mean they can’t sing.

Of course, the reason could also be that Hazbin Hotel is no longer an indie animation. At least, not anymore. Now that the show has a much bigger production than the pilot four years ago, many things will change. The replacement of voice actors should have been expected because of this.

Still, to replace every single one was a shock when it was announced back in 2021. Most fans are accustomed to the change now, especially with the recent trailer drop of the series. But it is still a pressing matter to other fans who were passionate about the project and OG voice actors since day one.

The new cast consists of these actors:

  • Erika Henningsen as Charlie Morningstar
  • Stephanie Beatriz as Vaggie
  • Amir Talai as Alastor
  • Blake Roman as Angel Dust
  • Keith David as Husk
  • Kimiko Glenn as Niffty
  • Alex Brightman as Sir Pentious
  • Christian Borle as Vox

Jeremy Jordan as Lucifer Morningstar

There’s no telling what the new Hazbin Hotel will be, but can it outshine the popularity of its own spinoff?

The Original Cast Were Not Informed

Fans have been frustrated with the recasts, and the original cast was not informed of their replacements. Regarding Angel Dust’s OG voice actor, Michael Kovach, some fans thought he might have been fired. Unfortunately, that is not the case here. He loved voicing Angel and said he would “always cherish [his] time with this character” and the rest of the Hazbin Hotel fandom. He made an X post briefly discussing it and why he (and other VAs) cannot discuss it publicly.

Alastor’s original voice actor, Gabriel C. Brown, also touched on the subject. In an X post, Brown responded to a fan’s sadness and concern that he would rather “be involved in a smaller project that values [him] than a bigger project that doesn’t.” This is a very fair response to being replaced without being properly informed. Hazbin Hotel is not the first adult animated show to replace certain cast members, but there really was no proper rhyme or reason for Brown, Kovach, or any of the other original voice actors.

Hazbin Hotel: Can A24 Find Success in the Animation Realm?

A24’s first foray into animation will focus on Hazbin Hotel, a creative animated series that’s built a significant amount of hype.

The pilot of Hazbin Hotel has roughly 92 million views as of today on YouTube. Why is it so popular? For one, the audience was captivated by the OG voice actors, their portrayals of the characters, and their singing. But the animation style and story are unique as well. It’s the best adult animation show for adults who want more dark humor and raunchiness compared to, for example, Family Guy. Will the series be good with the brand-new cast? So far, the trailer for the show seems promising. Hazbin Hotel will have a four-episode premiere on Prime Video on January 19, 2024.
