This time around, we have an EXCLUSIVE preview of the backup story in this week’s Sabrina Holiday Special, along with a traditional preview of the issue. Plus, a preview of this week’s Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #346.

First off, let’s just look at the normal preview of this week’s Sabrina Holiday Special, which has a lead story by the classic Sabrina creative team of Kelly Thompson and Veronica Fish (and colorist Matt Herms and letterer Jack Morelli)!

Celebrate the winter solstice with Sabrina Spellman in this special holiday one-shot that returns to the acclaimed world of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series! First, in “The Longest Night,” at Sabrina’s magic boarding school, she and her friends work together on the longest night of the year to save their friend enthralled by a dark and clever Beast, impossible to kill in his own world, and difficult to kill in our own. Then, in “A Very Spellman Solstice,” a flash backstory shows young Zelda and Hilda breaking tradition to go to a school dance, but when Hilda joins forces with one of the ghosts of Solstice past, it curses their night out. Writer Kelly Thompson and artists Veronica and Andy Fish return for another bewitching Sabrina story, along with the team of writer Danielle Paige and artist Veronica Johnson for a festive flashback story!

Not only did Archie provide these exclusive pages, but the company gave us some exclusive thoughts on the backup story from both Paige and Johnson…

Danielle Paige, Backup Story Writer

“If you love any incarnation of Sabrina the Teenage Witch then I think you have to love her aunts Hilda and Zelda. I have always been obsessed with the aunts and their origins. What were they like when they were young, how did they become the creepy, cool, funny, fierce witches that we love and that shaped our favorite witch? And Veronica brought them to life in our story so masterfully — we were really on the same page about placing the sisters Spellman in the ‘90s without ever even having a conversation about it. Her art is just so expressive and has so much emotion and heart and humor. I hope you love them as much as we do, and I hope this is just the first of many stories about their beginnings.”

Veronica Johnson / Backup Story Artist

“It’s great that the comic establishes a lot of Spellman family lore, and I think you’ll like this story about Hilda and Zelda. Danielle did an excellent job writing the story, and I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for this project. For anyone looking for more stories from Sabrina’s world, this is a great way to learn more about these supporting characters and how they came to be the adults they are today.”

Awesome. Be sure to look out for Sabrina Holiday Special #1 this week!

By the way, speaking of Sabrina and Christmas, you might be interested in reading this piece I did a while back about the very first Sabrina Christmas comic book, Sabrina’s Christmas Magic, which was released in 1971’s Archie Giant Series Magazine #196….

The cover of Archie Giant Series Magazine #196

In that issue, Al Hartley wrote and drew a fascinatingly bizarre story of Sabrina and Santa Claus having an in-depth discussion about faith. It’s really weird, but really interesting.

Okay, here’s the last preview for this week’s comics, Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #346, which features two brand-new stories. One of them is a Moose-driven tale by Alex Simmons, Bill Galvan, Jim Amash, Glenn Whitmore and Jack Morelli, but we don’t have a preview for that one. The one that we DO have a preview of is a Jaguar story by writer/penciler Bill Golliher, inker Bill Galvan, colorist Glenn Whitmore and letterer Jack Morelli, where the original Jaguar tries to help stop some bad guys, but the holidays have caused him to gain a little weight, and as a result, his belt (which gives him his powers) won’t fit, and it falls off! Check the comic out to see how the superhero deals with this wardrobe malfunction (and how Jughead and Archie help him out)!

Archie Sundays: The Jaguar Explores the History of Her Powers in a New One-Shot

TWO BRAND NEW STORIES! First, will Jaguar be able to tighten his belt in time to save Christmas, or is it up to Jughead and Archie? Buckle up for this one, it’s sure to be a bumpy ride! Then Moose helps the gang in a holiday marathon event to benefit sight-impaired children, cohosted by Carla Teal. But this isn’t your standard marathon—it’s filled with traps and obstacles galore!
