Every Episode in Echo Season 1, Ranked

The following contains spoilers for Echo, Season 1, now streaming on Disney+.

Marvel Studios’ Echo has arrived on Disney+ with a full-season premiere, a first for a live-action MCU series. The series sees the return of Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, who made her MCU debut as an antagonist on Hawkeye. She is joined by Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, Maya’s adoptive “Uncle” and a host of new characters. While some MCU fans were expecting something of a cameo fest, after the series’ first episode, Echo evolves into a much more self-contained story. This may be a sign of things to come in stories released under the new Marvel Spotlight banner, of which Echo is the first.

Echo serves as an origin story for the MCU’s version of Maya Lopez. This includes introducing her new power set, which was not seen in Hawkeye. While the comics gave Maya the same photographic reflexes as Taskmaster, her MCU counterpart has instead inherited the strengths and abilities of her ancestors, going all the way back to the first Choctaw people. Through Maya’s connection to her ancestors, the series becomes an intensely personal story about her Native heritage, as well as her relationship with Kingpin, who returns in terrifyingly brutal form. Across its five episodes, Echo adds a powerful new chapter to the MCU. Here’s how each episode ranks.

The second episode of Echo, “Lowak,” starts to explore Maya’s powers in an adventure that brings her together with her cousin, Biscuits. There are no particularly weak episodes of Echo Season 1, though “Lowak” perhaps lacks the stakes and depth of character study that is so prevalent throughout the rest of the series. Even so, however, there is plenty for audiences to love in this story. The episode delivers a high-octane adventure for Maya, develops a solid cast of supporting characters and offers up a compelling glimpse of Lowak — a sportswoman, strategic genius and ancestor of Maya’s.

The episode highlights Maya’s skill set, as she breaks into a moving train to plant a bomb in its cargo, which is intended for a group working for Wilson Fisk. While she has Biscuits following her to act as a getaway driver, she undertakes this mission alone, demonstrating her impressive capabilities. The episode sees Maya start to realize she has powers, looking down at glowing markings appearing on her hands as she frees herself from the coupling between train carriages. The moment somewhat punctures the darker and more intense tone Echo has established, but sets the stage for a power set unlike any seen in the MCU before.

10 Essential Episodes of MCU TV to Check Out Before Echo

Before Echo arrives on Disney+, revisit the murky worlds of Daredevil, Wilson Fisk and Maya Lopez in key stories from their previous MCU appearances.

Many of Marvel’s Disney+ series have struggled to deliver a finale that satisfies fans. While the Echo Season 1 finale, “Maya,” doesn’t fully break away from this trend, it still delivers a compelling ending to the series’ story with a few surprises along the way. The finale takes place in and around a Choctaw powwow, further anchoring Echo and its conclusion in Maya’s cultural heritage. This reminder of Maya’s background becomes especially pertinent in the episode’s climax, which sees Maya drawing upon the strengths of her ancestors in order to defeat Fisk’s henchmen and save her family.

The climactic showdown between Maya and Wilson Fisk also revealed that Maya is able to extend her powers to other members of her family, imbuing her cousin and grandmother with the ability to assist her in the fight against the Kingpin. In a surprising conclusion, Maya used her mother’s abilities as a healer to enter Fisk’s mind and apparently heal him of the childhood trauma that has defined so much of his life. While it is not yet clear what impact her actions may have had, a post-credits scene teases Fisk may be about to run for Mayor of New York. “Maya” delivers a good burst of action, along with a satisfying conclusion to Echo’s origin story, but isn’t quite a standout finale.

Echo Episode 4, “Taloa,” sees Maya reunited with Wilson Fisk for the first time since she shot him in Hawkeye. Having believed Fisk dead, his re-emergence comes as a shock to Maya and his efforts to mend the burnt bridges between them fall on deaf ears. The episode digs down into Maya’s relationship with Fisk, opening with a flashback to a day in her childhood when Fisk brutally attacked an ice cream vendor who had been rude to Maya on account of her deafness. In addition to this, “Taloa” sees Maya finally reunite with grandmother, from whom she learns the true significance of her powers.

“Taloa” is perhaps the best introduction to Wilson Fisk Echo has to offer for viewers who aren’t familiar with the character from Daredevil. While his not bothering to learn sign language feels a little out of place for a character whose most compelling facet has often been the contrast between his villainous brutality and the depth of his feelings for those close to him, “Taloa” nevertheless excellently portrays Fisk as a complex and nuanced villain. Juxtaposing Maya’s interactions with him against her learning about her birth family’s history from her grandmother makes for an emotionally striking episode that comes to define Maya Lopez’s path moving forwards.

10 MCU Characters Fans Are Eager to See Again

The MCU is filled with awesome characters that have only appeared a handful of times. But which characters do fans want to see return?

The first episode of Echo, “Chafa,” gets the series off to an explosive start. The opening scenes take place in a supernatural cave, filled with swirling lights, from which Maya’s ancient ancestor, Chafa, frees her people. Initially made of clay, these first Choctaw people then take human form. It’s a surprising opening for what is ostensibly a more grounded MCU series. From there, things only get wilder, with a look at Maya’s history that is sure to satisfy MCU fans. Following the accident that kills her mother and shatters her family, Maya is seen embarking on a life of crime that brings her into contact with Ronin, Kingpin and Daredevil.

Some fans may feel a little disappointed that Daredevil’s long-awaited appearance in Echo is only brief, lasting for only one brief fight scene, but his battle with Maya is a fast-paced, hard-hitting mini masterpiece of action choreography. From here, the episode goes on to establish Maya’s return to her childhood home in Tamaha, Oklahoma, recapping plenty of scenes from Hawkeye along the way. “Chafa” makes a bold mission statement for the rest of Echo, establishing it as a series rich in MCU mythology while definitively setting it apart from other Marvel stories with its isolated setting.

There may not be any cameos beyond a last-minute glimpse of Kingpin in “Tuklo,” but Episode 3 of Echo feels the most like an episode of Marvel’s Netflix series of any in the show’s first season, recapturing the intense drama that made Daredevil a hit. The episode sees Maya kidnapped by bounty hunters hoping to collect a reward from Wilson Fisk’s underlings. Maya is held captive at the local rollerskating rink, where her cousin, Bonnie, is also captured and held by the kidnappers. This leads to an intense reunion, where emotions bubbling under the surface are barely kept in check by the deadly situation.

The episode highlights Maya’s ingenuity and her capabilities as a fighter with some impactful combat as she breaks free of her captors’ hold. The episode also establishes the hierarchy of power that exists beneath Kingpin, showing the fear his henchmen instill in others and, in turn, the fear that Fisk himself instills in them. The episode opens with a look at another of Maya’s ancestors, the sharpshooter Tuklo, which is delivered in an artful to silent cinema. The episode is filled with intense confrontation and impressive set pieces from beginning to end, showcasing everything that makes Echo a welcome addition to the MCU.
