Disney’s New X-Files Series Confirmed to Be in Development, Ryan Coogler Will Produce

  • Disney is developing a new X-Files series with producer Ryan Coogler, known for Black Panther and Creed.
  • Netflix is also entering the “franchise era,” with spinoff projects for its popular IPs.
  • The X-Files reboot will have a more diverse cast and may feature guest appearances from the original stars.

Disney is developing a new X-Files series with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler on board as producer, it has now been confirmed. While details of this new X-Files project remain largely unknown at this time, a new report by Bloomberg has revealed that the project is happening and describes the series as “a new version.”

“Disney, which birthed the idea of “cinematic universes,” is developing a new version of X-Files that would be produced by Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Creed.”

The confirmation that Disney is developing a new The X-Files series comes amid the news that Netflix is now entering its “franchise era.” Several of the streaming giant’s biggest IPs now reportedly have spinoff projects in the works, with the studio working on a series centered on Uncle Fester off the back of the Addams Family series, Wednesday.

The likes of the hit action movie, Extraction, and the crime drama television series Peaky Blinders also now have spinoffs in the works, with Netflix eager to build on the success of the originals and thus spawn their own major franchises.

This confirmation comes following recent reports that a reboot of The X-Files is in the works. Chris Carter, creator of the hit sci-fi series, has revealed in a new interview for On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko that Ryan Coogler is working on a new take on the series. Coogler, who helmed the original Creed along with both Black Panther movies, is said to be introducing a more diverse cast compared to the original show. Carter held back on divulging any other information about the reboot beyond the plans for its cast and Coogler’s involvement. Carter said in the interview, via Bloody Disgusting

“I just spoke to a young man… Ryan Coogler… who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

It was previously reported in 2020 that there were plans to make an animated adaptation of the show called The X-Files: Albuquerque. The current status of that project remains unclear.

These days, many reboots are set in the same universe as their predecessors, but with all-new casts. NBC recently found success by going down this route with the network’s new take on Quantum Leap. While the reboot does not bring back original star Scott Bakula, it references characters and events from the original TV show. With this in mind, it’s possible that Coogler’s X-Files reboot could similarly continue the franchise with new lead stars while featuring guest appearances from the original show’s stars. That may also depend on if David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be interested.

“For me, it was always there’s no show unless it’s Chris and Gillian, so I don’t know,” Duchovny recently told ComicBook.com. “Personally, for me, the X-Files that I’m involved in consists of Chris Carter, myself, and Gillian, so I haven’t spent time trying to think about a different version of that, and I don’t know that I will.”

However, while Anderson has also previously cast doubt on ever returning to the role of Dana Scully, prior comments she’s made would suggest that she may actually be more open to getting involved with something like what Coogler is planning for the series.

“It just feels like such an old idea,” Anderson told Variety in 2021, addressing a potential Scully return. “I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note. In order to even begin to have that conversation [about another season] there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive. So yeah, it’s very much in the past.”
