Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, is officially returning in Echo, the next Disney+ series in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The blind lawyer turned crimefighting vigilante is a fan-favorite character whose adventures are only just beginning, with his many recent appearances all leading up to his Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again.
The Man With No Fear made his first MCU appearance in Daredevil, his very own Netflix television show. Although this series, along with Marvel’s other Netflix shows, aren’t strictly canon, Cox’s return in recent MCU projects suggests that his character has lived through similar events nonetheless. As a result, Daredevil’s full timeline in the MCU becomes much clearer ahead of his return in Echo.
10 1980s-90s: Matt Murdock’s Early Life And Training
The MCU needs to invest and build upon its street-level characters, as the franchise struggles with its precarious financial situation.
- As Seen In Daredevil Season 1
Matt Murdock was born to Jack and Maggie Murdock in 1985. Matt’s mother left the family while he was still an infant, joining a sisterhood of nuns in the nearby area and leaving Jack to raise their son alone in Hell’s Kitchen. At the age of nine, Matt was involved in an accident that stole his vision, leaving him permanently blind.
Jack Murdock was eventually killed when he refused to throw a boxing match for the mob, leaving his son an orphan in the care of the local Catholic orphanage. There, he began receiving visits from a strange old man known only as Stick. Stick warned Matt of a war that would soon be coming, eventually taking him under his wing as a pupil.
9 2000s: Matt’s Lawyer Career And Early Vigilantism
- As Seen In Daredevil Season 1
Sometime later, Matt had a falling out with Stick, eventually going out on his own and attending law school, where he met Foggy Nelson. At college, Matt also made his first contact with Elektra Natchios, a wealthy heiress with ties to Chaste, Stick’s group of warriors. He and Elektra dated for a while, but eventually went their separate ways.
Matt and Foggy graduated law school together and landed jobs at a prestigious law firm in New York City. There, they were set up for long and illustrious careers but eventually grew disillusioned with the corporate environment. To help more vulnerable people, the two young lawyers set up their own firm: Nelson & Murdock. However, even amid a burgeoning new career, Matt felt drawn to use the skills that Stick had taught him as a child.
8 2014: The Birth Of Daredevil And Rise Of Kingpin
- As Seen In Daredevil Season 1
Seeing that practicing law could only take him so far, Matt Murdock began to go out at night, disguising himself in all black and beating criminals who dared to walk the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. Rumors began to spread about “the devil of Hell’s Kitchen,” who vowed to protect his neighborhood from violent crime. However, it wouldn’t be long before Matt Murdock found himself in over his head.
As Daredevil, Matt occasionally lost battles against criminals, leading him to seek the medical aid of a local nurse named Claire Temple. However, things took a sharp turn when Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin, a businessman and mob boss began taking over the city’s underworld. Daredevil and the Kingpin engaged in a weeks-long struggle for the heart of New York, ending with Fisk behind bars.
7 2015: Battle Against The Hand
Echo is the first MCU TV show with a TV-MA rating and this could be a step toward more mature series starring characters like Punisher and Daredevil.
- As Seen In Daredevil Season 2
A year after defeating the Kingpin, Daredevil found much of his past coming back to haunt him. Old allies like Stick and Elektra Natchios came back into his life, warning him that the villainous group known as the Hand was ready to make its move for global domination. Despite his better judgment, Matt agrees to help fight the Hand, though his renewed commitment to the mantle of Daredevil leads to him alienating friends like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page.
Daredevil and Elektra take a stand against the Japanese yakuza, led by Nobu, a high-ranking general in the Hand. Although they emerge victorious, Elektra is killed. Matt takes her death hard and, in a moment of pain, admits to Karen that he is Daredevil, straining their relationship for the next several months.
6 2016: Joining The Defenders
After his battle with the Hand, Matt Murdock gives up his vigilante career, deciding that there is no longer any need for Daredevil. However, the Hand’s return forces him to team up with a group of street-level heroes, including Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Together, they form the team known as the Defenders.
Daredevil and the other Defenders take a stand against the Hand, which has returned with a vengeance and designs to take over the entire world using a weapon known as the Black Sky. The Defenders eventually learn that the Black Sky is none other than a resurrected Elektra Natchios, who eventually takes over the Hand entirely.
5 2016: Apparent Death
Disney+’s upcoming Daredevil: Born again is the perfect opportunity to adapt the Man Without Fear’s greatest comics.
After a drawn-out battle with the Hand, things come to a head in Midland Circle, where the villainous organization plans to harvest the coveted Resurrection Elixir. The Defenders infiltrate the Hand’s base of operations and manage to defeat its top generals, leaving them to face off against Elektra Natchios.
While the heroes fight the Hand, Claire Temple, Colleen Wing, and Misty Knight plant enough explosives to bring the entire building crumbling down. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones manage to flee in time, but Daredevil stays behind to be with Elektra. Both are seemingly killed in the ensuing destruction.
4 2017/2018: Return And War For New York
- As Seen In Daredevil Season 3
Unbeknownst to any of the Defenders, Matt Murdock survived the destruction of Midland Circle and was rescued by Sister Maggie, who later reveals that she is his biological mother, and her fellow nuns, who helped nurse the wounded vigilante back to health. In the midst of a deep depression, Matt sees no point in continuing his civilian life or his career as Daredevil — until he learns that Wilson Fisk is back in New York City.
The Kingpin’s return leads Matt to embrace his Daredevil persona “one last time” to bring his old enemy to justice for good. During the struggle, Matt very nearly loses everything — and even has his secret revealed to Fisk. In the end, however, he is able to get the better of Fisk and put him away for what he hopes is the last time.
3 2024: Matt Murdock Represents Peter Parker
- As Seen In Spider-Man: No Way Home
Matt Murdock makes a surprise cameo appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he is shown to still be practicing law many years after his last appearance in Daredevil Season 3. He is hired as Peter Parker’s attorney after the high schooler is revealed as Spider-Man to the entire world.
While Murdock’s role in No Way Home is brief, it was a major step forward for the character in that it confirmed his existence in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a result of this cameo, rumors persist that Daredevil will appear in Spider-Man 4, potentially giving audiences the street-level team-up that they have been waiting for.
2 2025: Matt Murdock Begins A Relationship With Jennifer Walters
While Deborah Ann Woll did a stunning job as Karen Page in Netflix’s Daredevil, there is another actor who deserves redemption in that role as well.
- As Seen In She-Hulk: Attorney At Law
Matt Murdock returns in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where he accepts a case in Los Angeles, California. There, he meets superhero attorney Jennifer Walters, a.k.a. She-Hulk. The two immediately ignite a fiery rivalry, which only grows more complicated when Jennifer discovers that Matt is also the vigilante known as Daredevil.
This marks the first time that audiences have seen Matt Murdock in his vigilante identity since his return to the MCU. During this period, he sports a new yellow suit, designed by Luke Jacobson. By the end of the series, Matt and Jennifer have begun dating, though it is unclear if this relationship will carry on into future MCU projects.
1 2025: Matt Murdock Joins Maya Lopez’s Crusade Against Kingpin
The early trailers for Echo revealed that Daredevil will return once more in the upcoming Disney+ series. Daredevil and Echo will team up on their mutual crusade to hunt down and stop Wilson Fisk once and for all.
This will potentially mark the first time that Daredevil and Kingpin come face to face since their respective returns to the MCU in recent years. While audiences eagerly anticipate their reunion, it seems likely that Daredevil and Kingpin’s battle won’t end in echo, since both characters are confirmed to appear in Daredevil: Born Again.
Maya Lopez must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.
