About Time (2013) – Starz

Margot Robbie in About Time
Universal Pictures

About Time was the first major movie in Robbie’s career, and fans can only hope that she will join more rom-coms in the future. The film tells the story of Tim, a young time traveler who begins to use his special abilities to change the course of his life. When he falls madly in love, he’s faced with a harrowing dilemma. About Time starts off as a typical romance movie with hints of sci-fi, then offers beautiful insights into fatherhood, love, and the perpetual longing for genuine human connections.

Robbie’s Dazzling Breakthrough

Robbie brings all her charm and sweetness to the film as Charlotte, one of Tim’s first love interests. Her performance, alongside other stars such as Rachel McAdams, Domhnall Gleeson, and Bill Nighy, is what makes the relationships in the movie so charming and believable. Much like with her role in The Wolf of Wall Street, she is presented as the “ideal” woman, but Robbie is able to imbue the character with such charm in her very small amount of screentime that she becomes so much more than an archetype that other movies might have used her as. It was clear to anyone who saw About Time that Robbie was going to be a star. Stream on Starz

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) – Paramount+ & Peacock

Margot Robbie & Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street
Paramount Pictures

The Wolf of Wall Street is another shocking true story that Martin Scorsese dynamically translates into the big screen. Leonardo DiCaprio embodies the infamous Jordan Belfort, a successful Wall Street stockbroker that rises to the top, savors a life of exorbitant pleasures and outrageous vices, then abruptly loses everything in a scheme of fraud. In the film, Robbie plays the fascinating Naomi Lapaglia, an astonishing woman that wins Jordan’s heart and embarks with him on a life of excess. It’s one of her most hypnotic performances, and her chemistry with DiCaprio offers some of the movie’s best and most shocking moments.

Sensational Chemistry

The Wolf of Wall Street shows the decadent reality of the business reality, exposing the greed and selfishness of the people who live in a world where money is the only ruler. While Robbie had been working in television and film before, The Wolf of Wall Street is the film that put her on the map and made her one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood. Z for Zachariah (2015) – Prime Video

The cast of Z for Zachariah
Lionsgate

One of Robbie’s more underrated yet nonetheless compelling performances was in the apocalyptic sci-fi film Z for Zachariah, an adaptation of the Robert C. O’Brien novel of the same name that centers on a trio of nuclear war survivors who become swept up in an intense and complicated love triangle. Robbie is joined by Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the gripping picture, as the two men compete for the affections of perhaps the only woman left on Earth, leading to a shocking showdown.

An Understated & Delicate Portrayal

Robbie was phenomenal in her performance as the emotionally conflicted survivor, and to prepare for the role she mastered an Appalachian accent and dyed her hair brown to embody the character. Upon its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the actress’ performances was singled out by critics, with New York Daily News commending Robbie and saying she “exudes confidence, mournfulness and delicate decency in a role that could easily have been a sci-fi cliche. What she does here is subtle and beguiling.” Stream on Prime Video

Focus (2015) – Max

Will Smith & Margot Robbie in Focus
Warner Bros. Pictures

Focus is one of Robbie’s lesser-known movies, a contemporary noir film with welcoming hints of humor underneath the layers of drama. The chemistry between Will Smith and Robbie alone is a good reason to watch the movie. Smith is Nicky, a veteran con artist whose latest scheme is put at risk after the arrival of Jess, a woman from his past who dedicated years of her life to becoming a dangerous femme fatale.

Cinematic Dream Team

The two leads play an engaging game of seduction that turns out to be more interesting than the plot itself. This film marked the first time Smith and Robbie would collaborate together as the duo would reunite the next year in Suicide Squad as Deadshot and Harley Quinn, respectively. Focus delves into topics such as love and trust, but a life of crime is the common denominator that causes Nicky and Jess to cross paths once again. Until the very final scene of Focus, viewers will ask themselves what fate has in store for the couple, and the answer is a sweet surprise. Stream on Max

I, Tonya (2017) – Max

Margot Robbie in I, Tonya (2017)
Neon / 30West

I, Tonya marked a pivotal moment in Robbie’s career: it not only earned the actress her first Oscar nomination, but it was also the first time a big movie revolved entirely around her performance. It was also the first time she would be a producer on a film. The film offers an in-depth look into Tonya Harding’s turbulent life, retelling not only how she stood out among the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships but also how her ex-husband nearly destroyed her promising future.

An Oscar-Worthy Endeavor

I, Tonya is a film with a strong emotional charge, thanks to Robbie’s heartbreaking performance — according to her, it was the performance that made her realize she’s a good actress. Robbie perfectly incorporates all of Harding’s mannerisms and, most importantly, the frustration and disappointment of being ridiculed by the world when all Hardin needed was emotional support. While Robbie did not win the Best Actress Oscar, losing to Francis McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, it cemented Robbie is one of the best actresses currently working today and a powerhouse producer to be reckoned with. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) – Hulu

Margot Robbie portrays actress Sharon Tate
Sony Pictures Releasing

Robbie teams up with DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and a memorable cast of supporting characters to tell a story that challenges the boundaries of reality. Quentin Tarantino tends to play with the past, but in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he takes this feat to another level. His movies have always been filled with creative references and mentions of movies and artists that inspired him to become the talented director he is today. Unsurprisingly, Tarantino calls it his best movie yet (as per Variety).

Robbie’s Touching Tribute

With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino evokes a late-60s LA marked by a thriving, yet changing Hollywood, in contrast with an era impacted by the counterculture and the rise of dangerous political moves. To illustrate this period of U.S. history with a good dash of fiction, Tarantino chooses Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth, a washed-up movie star and his stunt double, two best friends who are polar opposites of each other. The icing on the cake is a dazzling Sharon Tate, brought to life by Robbie in a heartwarming tribute. Stream on Hulu

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020) – Max & Netflix

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey
Warner Bros. Pictures

While there’s a lot to complain about in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, one of the few things that fans unanimously agree about in the movie is that Robbie looks as if she was born to play the role of Harley Quinn. The success of her performance ended up being bigger than Suicide Squad itself, earning Harley Quinn a sole movie that perfectly captures the essence of the character’s twisted yet vibrant personality. Robbie not only stars in the project but is also one of the producers involved.

Robbie’s Phenomenal Performance

With stunning outbursts of color and playful editing, Birds of Prey illustrates how unique of a villain Harley Quinn is. She’s much more than a typical trickster; there’s sort of a poisonous sweetness about her, and she gives in to her violent impulses in a comical fashion. In the film, Harley Quinn teams up with an unexpected group of superheroes who intend to save a little girl from a crime lord. Much like Barbie, it was a movie that Robbie helped bring into being to highlight more female characters, and it became one of the best films in the DCEU. Stream on Max and Netflix

The Suicide Squad (2021) – Max & Netflix

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad
Warner Bros. Pictures

Read Our Review

After the fiasco of Suicide Squad and the divisive reception of Bird of Prey, Robbie’s return as Harley Quinn was a welcome surprise, especially with the generous screen time the character receives. There’s a whole segment of the movie dedicated to Harley Quinn, which features some of The Suicide Squad‘s most thrilling action sequences as she rampages across a mansion full of enemies like an army of one. The film revolves around a new group of unreliable supervillains who join the secret and ultra-dangerous Task Force X, where they must infiltrate a deadly island on a search-and-destroy mission.

Harley’s Thrilling Return

The Suicide Squad introduces a set of characters that absolutely hate each other, united for a common goal. It doesn’t take long before their selfish ideals get in the way, and different from the first Suicide Squad, the film effectively balances a dark sense of humor with plenty of violence. It speaks to not only Robbie’s star power but how beloved her version of Harley Quinn is that she is one of the few returning cast members from the first movie, and the one with the biggest role in the film. While her future as Harley Quinn is uncertain, The Suicide Squad might be her best performance as the character. Stream on Max and Netflix

Babylon (2022) – Prime Video

Margot Robbie in Babylon
Paramount Pictures

Read Our Review

Babylon is the first of hopefully many collaborations between Robbie and one of the most promising filmmakers of his time, Damien Chazelle. After the success of Whiplash and La La Land, fans were eager for another creative homage to cinema, this time focused on Hollywood’s golden era. Rather than a conventional tribute to Hollywood, what the audience got was a chaotic journey into the transition from silent films to sound movies, exposing the beauty of filmmaking but also the unscrupulous lifestyle of the people involved.

A Scene-Stealing Portrayal

Chazelle doesn’t skimp on resources to show the depravity and vices that pollute the life behind the camera. While it has plenty of funny moments, Babylon is at its best when it delves deep into the drama of its characters, from what motivates them to what destroys them. At the center of it all, Robbie is a true scene-stealer as Nellie, a self-obsessed actress who gains more than she bargained for in her search for fame and prestige. One of Robbie’s trademark abilities, the ability to cry on command, becomes part of the characterization. Robbie’s star power and charisma were the front and center for the film’s marketing, as her iconic red dress was the film’s poster and all over the trailers. Despite it being a box office bomb and snubbed by the Academy Awards in most categories (it did receive nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design), it is certainly one of Robbie’s best performances.
