And Just Like That… a third season of the Max series has been greenlit. The sequel spin-off to the immensely popular Sex and the City, which ran on HBO for six seasons, is coming back for another round of fashion, fun and friendship in the Big Apple. The news comes prior to the season two finale of And Just Like That…, which drops on Thursday, August 24. Sarah Aubrey, Max’s head of content, made it official in a statement (via Deadline):
“As we approach the highly anticipated season finale on Thursday, we raise our cosmos to Michael Patrick King and his magnificent team of writers, producers, cast and crew who continue to charm us, 25 years later, with dynamic friendships and engaging stories. We cannot wait for audiences to see where Season 3 will take our favorite New Yorkers.”
Season two’s finale, which is titled The Last Supper Part Two: Entrée, will pick up after the devastating conclusion of The Last Supper Part One: Appetizer. Aidan (John Corbett) just visited his son at the hospital after the boy drove his father’s truck into a tree — and severely injured himself. Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) love interest, Aidan, made his first appearance on And Just Like That… in season two, but he and Carrie have a past spanning nearly 25 years.
And Just Like That… Returns for a Third Season
Carrie (Parker) and Aidan’s (Corbett) relationship arguably isn’t as “Big” as the marriage Carrie shared with the late John James Preston (Chris Noth). Nevertheless, after the developer of the Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That…, Michael Patrick King, killed off John in the very first episode of season one, the show needed a boost. Max’s Head of Content, Sarah Aubrey, also said in the same statement:
“We are delighted to share that since the launch of Season 2, ‘And Just Like That..’ ranks as the No. 1 Max Original overall and is the most-watched returning Max Original to date.”
Writer Carrie Bradshaw was in desperate need of a meaningful, loving relationship after the death of Mr. Big, aka John James Preston, who served as the author and columnist’s primary love interest in the majority of Sex and the City’s six seasons and both feature films. But with the arrival of Aidan, And Just Like That… has a real chance to flourish as the Max series continues.
“We are thrilled to spend more time in the ‘Sex and the City’ universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors. And Just Like That… here comes Season 3.”
Aidan first appeared in Sex and the City season three to serve as another love interest for Carrie and a foil to Mr. Big. But when Aidan discovered Carrie cheated on him with Big, the relationship ended. Aidan returned in season four, which saw the pair rekindle their love affair. But Aidan’s need for marriage and commitment eventually pushed Carrie away.
Afterward, and before showing up in season two of And Just Like That…, Aidan made a single cameo in season six of the HBO series and in Sex and the City 2 (2010). The And Just Like That… season three debut is TBD. But fans can check out the season two finale promo, which teases the return of Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), below:
