Star Wars actor Adam Driver has clarified his future in the franchise, saying once again that he won’t be returning to a galaxy far, far away.
While speaking on the Smartless podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Driver was asked about the current state of Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise over four years after he last appeared in the series. Driver stated that “[Lucasfilm] are doing stuff, but not with me,” before adding, “I’m not doing it anymore.” Driver first joined the Star Wars galaxy with The Force Awakens in 2015, before going on to play Kylo Ren again in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. In the last film, Kylo Ren turned back to the light and redeemed himself, becoming Ben Solo once again before sacrificing himself with Rey. According to Driver, that death appears to be permanent.
Of all the misunderstood moments in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Canto Bight sequence with Finn, Rose and that turncoat DJ may be the most maligned.
Driver is currently promoting his latest film Ferrari, the latest awards season push from the actor who has previously been nominated for two Academy Awards. While on the press tour for Michael Mann’s new film, Driver has discussed his role in Star Wars a few times, including the reveal that it was never the original plan to have Ben Solo come back to the light. According to Driver, JJ Abrams and co. originally planned to have Kylo Ren grow more and more confident in the dark side of the Force, with the killing of Han Solo acting as the start of that journey.
Original Plans Changed for Kylo Ren
“I had an overall arc in mind that he wanted to do, which then changed,” Driver said when asked about the original plans for the sequel trilogy. “His idea was almost the opposite journey of Vader, where Vader starts the most confident, the most committed to the Dark Side, and by the last movie he’s the most vulnerable, and weak, and he wanted to start at the opposite, where this character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three movies would be most committed to the Dark Side.”
The Last Jedi and Pride & Prejudice have iconic enemies-to-lovers romances. Rian Johnson’s confirmed that they have even more in common than that.
Some fans speculated that Driver could return to Star Wars in Daisy Ridley’s upcoming new film, which is scheduled to release in 2026. So far, only Ridley has been confirmed to come back out of the cast from the sequel trilogy. Before Star Wars returns to the big screen, there are set to be several new seasons of television airing on Disney+. Next year, for example, The Acolyte, The Bad Batch season 3, Tales of the Jedi season 2, and Skeleton Crew are all set to release in 2023.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy is streaming now on Disney+.
Created by George Lucas, Star Wars began in 1977 with the then-eponymous film that would later be retitled Episode IV: A New Hope. The original Star Wars trilogy centered on Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, who helped lead the Rebel Alliance to victory over the tyrannous Galactic Empire. This Empire was overseen by Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine, who was aided by the cybernetic menace known as Darth Vader. In 1999, Lucas returned to Star Wars with a prequel trilogy that explored how Luke’s father Anakin Skywalker became a Jedi and eventually succumbed to the dark side of the Force.
