14 Best Comedy Movies on Peacock to Watch Right Now

When it comes to comedy television series, there really is no better streamer than Peacock. Not just because Peacock is the home of The Office and Parks and Recreation. It also has a wealth of brilliant comedy movies. Specifically, ones that are either straightforward comedic or genre-blenders that at least somewhat incorporate comedy.

What follows are the best of the best when it comes to comedic films on Peacock. From family-accessible content to R-rated laughers, there’s something for everyone. In fact, there’s enough to provide for a hilarious double feature, whether the viewers are kiddos or 45 years old.

13 Bruce Almighty (2003)

Bruce Almighty was one of the final releases of Jim Carrey’s box office dominance. It’s easy to see why because while both Bruce and the later Yes Man are relatively high-concept films, the former is the most unique comedy the actor has ever made. After all, who wouldn’t want to imagine themselves in the title character’s shoes, wielding the powers of the almighty?

High Concept, High Pay-Off

Carrey and Jennifer Aniston have solid chemistry throughout Bruce Almighty, but the real appeal is seeing Bruce use his Godly powers. However, this is also the film that introduced audiences (on a mass scale) to the talents of Steve Carell, who was doing his on-air motormouthed bit before he was ever called Michael Scott. Not to mention, Bruce Almighty was the movie to put Morgan Freeman in the shoes he was born to fill: those of God.

12 Hell Baby (2013)

Hell Baby

Hell Baby

Release Date
September 6, 2013

Rating
R

Directed by Reno 911!‘s Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (both of whom also wrote it and have supporting roles), Hell Baby is as goofy a project as one might expect from such a duo. The plot follows a couple calling on the Vatican to save them from a demonic baby. With more-than-capable leading performances from Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb (both of whom seem fully on Garant and Lennon’s wavelength), Hell Baby ends up being a slight but overlooked comedy.

A Stacked Cast and an Absurd Premise

The supporting cast alone is enough to make Hell Baby worth watching. For one, it was one of Keegan-Michael Key’s earliest big roles in a motion picture, and he did not disappoint. But then there are other comedy favorites (many of whom starred alongside Corddry in Children’s Hospital) such as Riki Lindhome, Rob Huebel, Michael Ian Black, and Kumail Nanjianji providing laughs and gasps at the sight of the titular baby.

11 Mystery Men (1999)

It’s amazing how ahead of its time Mystery Men was. It was a high-budget spoof of high-budget superhero movies three years before even the original Spider-Man had hit theaters. It’s also not surprising that the star-studded film faltered, with its high price tag and niche sense of humor. But, those who like Mystery Men really like Mystery Men.

This Ben Stiller Vehicle Flew Under the Radar

Mystery Men is more of a cult item than a widely appealing studio comedy, and that’s what makes it so special. It’s a movie that doesn’t mind going dark, alienating some audience members and further embracing others simultaneously. Which makes it logical the film’s accrued the following it has. Even with Paul Reubens’ passing, never count out a Mystery Men 2. After all, Ben Stiller’s up for it.

10 The Nutty Professor (1996)

the nutty professor

A major hit to add to Eddie Murphy’s list of them, The Nutty Professor was one of the final big successes before the actor’s lull period (which has since been fully reversed via Dolemite Is My Name and the forthcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F). But what a hit it was, and what a showcase for Murphy’s ability to play several characters in a single scene.

Some of Murphy’s Best Work

The Klumps’s dinner scenes are about as iconic as anything from ’90s comedy can get outside of Austin Powers or The Big Lebowski. But, unlike the sequel, the first Murphy Nutty Professor is about character rather than gross-out gags (such as a big hamster throwing poop balls). This is Murphy at his best, and it’s worth seeking out to see him in top form.

9 Please Don’t Destroy: The Legend of Foggy Mountain (2023)

Please Don’t Destroy, the comedy troupe featuring Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall, has done very well on SNL, effectively stepping into the shoes of The Lonely Island. Now, like The Lonely Island with Hot Rod and Popstar, they’ve broken into film. Here, three friends decide they’re dissatisfied with their lives and promptly embark on a hunt for buried treasure.

For Fans of Sketch Comedy

Is Please Don’t Destroy: The Legend of Foggy Mountain a truly great film? No. But, for a feature debut from a comedy troupe, it could be way worse. It can play like a series of sketches, each of which is stretched to the point of discomfort, but it always manages to throw something new at the audience before they get bored. Not to mention, Conan O’Brien is absolutely hysterical in this film.

8 The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

The triumphant return of the R-rated comedy, Judd Apatow’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin tells the tale of Andy Stitzer, a grown man who has never gone all the way. With his coworkers’ help, Stitzer hopes to lose his virginity (and, if possible, meet the love of his life) before he’s 41.

What Makes It Great?

Released the same year as The Office debuted, The 40-Year-Old Virgin was just one project that made Steve Carell 2005’s biggest star. But it wouldn’t be that way if the movie, or his lead performance, weren’t up to snuff. It is, not because it goes for R-rated laughs, but because it has a beating heart at its center.

7 Bernie (2011)

Bernie

Bernie

Release Date
April 27, 2011

Rating
PG-13

Every now and then, Jack Black stars in a smaller indie that allows him to explore his range differently than blockbusters like Jumanji: The Next Level. Richard Linklater’s Bernie has the beloved School of Rock actor as a too-kind mortician who finds himself under the thumb of an elderly widow. But, before long, Bernie’s had enough, and his kindhearted nature may very well be replaced with a murderous one.

A Killer Performance From Black

Bernie was based on a true story, and it’s impressive just how much it makes a murderer at least somewhat understandable. The film does a terrific job of showing us just who Bernie Tiede is before he’s been pushed into a corner, and that makes its showing of what happens later all the more effective. Bernie is a dark comedy, but thanks to Linklater’s direction and Black’s performance, it never goes too dark the same way it never goes too unbelievable.

6 Bridesmaids (2011)

The narrative of Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids follows Annie, a 30-something woman who has felt lost ever since her bakery shuttered. Now that her best friend is getting married, and she’s not even in a stable relationship, Annie’s lost feelings become only more intensified. The incredible cast features Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy, to name a few.

An All-Time Great Comedy

One of the best and most successful women-led comedies ever made, Paul Feig’s film was a major box office success in May 2011, and for good reason. The script from Wiig and Annie Mumolo has a surplus of energy, and the entire cast’s performances are pitch-perfect. It’s a laugh-a-minute experience, but also a touching one.

5 Goon (2011)

Goon

Goon

Release Date
January 6, 2012

Rating
R

The well-cast Goon tells the story of Doug Glatt (Sean William Scott), a 30-something man with a big heart but little direction in life. When Glatt is inadvertently discovered as a great potential enforcer (A.K.A. he can throw a punch) while attending a hockey game, he finds his future altered for the better. After a lifetime of not fitting in with his brainy family, this is the break he deserves.

You Don’t Need to Be a Hockey Fan to Enjoy Goon

Even including Steve Stiffler, Sean William Scott has never been better than he is in Goon. He can play a nice guy who isn’t superficial but rather blatantly true of heart, and to see that juxtaposed with his physical brutality is a hoot. Interestingly, this tale is actually based on the true story of a man’s entry into the world of minor-league hockey.

4 Liar Liar (1997)

What’s a lawyer if not a liar with a few letters changed up? In the case of Liar Liar‘s Fletcher Reede, there’s no difference at all. As of late, he’s found his family growing increasingly tired of his lack of reliability. Reede has two choices, reform a bit and secure his relationship with his son, or keep getting career success and end up an old, bitter, ice cube.

15 Best Horror Movies on Peacock to Watch Right Now

Peacock has plenty of spooky favorites for viewers to either rewatch or get acquainted with on the NBCUniversal streaming service.

Carrey’s Motormouthed Opus

Any ’90s comedy project that required a motor mouth was already perfectly tailored to one of two performers: Eddie Murphy or Jim Carrey. Make no mistake, Liar Liar wouldn’t be what it is without Carrey, who imbues his character and the film as a whole with a certain charmingly relatable nature, because deep down he’s not dishonest, he’s just perhaps a bit too good at his job. Much like his character, Carrey is also in his element here, doing what he does best.

3 MacGruber (2010)

In 2010, The Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone directed MacGruber, a feature-length adaptation of a repeated SNL pre-taped sketch. The story follows semi-professional bomb defuser MacGruber as he’s called out of his self-imposed isolation to come back into the government fold and take down his ultimate adversary: Dieter Von Cunth.

A Lonely Island Fan’s Dream

Will Forte’s take on McGyver was funny each and every time it hit SNL, which can’t be said for the vast majority of the series’ other oft-repeating sketches. If they’re on the film’s wavelength, there’s no limit to the number of times someone can watch MacGruber the film and not laugh. After all, it’s quotable as can be.

2 Sex Drive (2008)

Sex Drive

Sex Drive

Release Date
October 16, 2008

Rating
R

The narrative of 2008’s goofy Sex Drive follows Ian, a nerdy teen who is ready to go all the way. When he thinks he’s got a chance with an internet pen pal, he and his two best friends set off across the country to see if she’s the real deal. For a comedy that flew under the radar, the cast is surprisingly great, featuring Josh Zuckerman, Clark Duke, James Marsden, and Seth Green.

Equal Parts Humor and Heart

A late 2000s R-rated comedy that more or less came and went from theaters, Sex Drive has much more depth than the generic marketing material indicated. It was also a solid early showcase for the talents of Silicon Valley‘s Amanda Crew and Hot Tub Time Machine‘s Clark Duke. It’s likely this is something you’ve never heard of, so why not give the Peacock hidden gem a chance?

1 Vengeance (2022)

The Office‘s B. J. Novak made his feature-length directorial debut with Vengeance, and it was a doozy. The plot follows Novak’s journalist Ben Manalowitz, who is nothing if not a combination of entitled and curious. When he learns that one of his past flings has died, and she had told her family that she and Manalowitz were more serious than they actually were, the journalist finds himself wrapped up in solving her murder.

Novak’s Directorial Debut Is More Interesting than Expected

The mystery that fuels Vengeance is undoubtedly interesting, even outright surprising. But the key to the film is Novak’s script, which further cements the fact that, if Vengeance is any indication, the Office alum is capable of delivering some seriously thought-provoking character-focused pieces. Rather than the kind of out-and-out comedy that you might expect from Novak, Vengeance is fascinatingly layered.
